I just finished reading one of the saddest stories I have read in a long time. It is about the growing number of new homeless veterans. I knew that this occurred a lot during the Vietnam war but I was not aware that this has been a trend since America began going to war. "It is a disgrace" as one of these veterans put it. And I undoubtedly agree. I have no opinion any more if the war was for the greater good or not. Nor do I care to hear someones view on the war. My focus on this post is the HOMELESS VETERANS. That's it, no more and no less. I don't mean to be rude. I just want to keep the focus of this post where it belongs.
Personally, I think it is a sad state of affairs when we do not practice what we preach. I thought in America we were supposed to take care of our own. That includes our veterans doesn't it? The more and more I think about it, the more I realized that some of us are blinded by what we believe and what is real. I know pertaining to this matter I was, I thought we would take better care of our soldiers than we have in the past.
For example, during the Vietnam war many people we against the war. And they despised the veterans and called them baby killers. It was misdirected anger that many veterans didn't deserve. Even worse many of these veterans became homeless and suffered through mental illness. I cannot help to wonder how did our government let it happen? Did our government forget about the veterans, and/or were they ashamed of them as well? I do not know but I do know that they did deserve more respect than they received, regardless of if you were for or against the war.
Now with our new wars raging on, we seem to be doing the same thing only the veterans are not being called baby killers. But we do seem to be letting them suffer with no real help for those who need special attention. I think the only way they will get the help is if we all band together to help them. We need to write our senators or who ever you may think will listen and urge them to find some way of helping out veterans.
I have included a link the article I read on AOL.
