Food Banks are in need.

By

I was talking with a friend that volunteers at the local food bank.

He was telling me that they are always in need, but are way behind for this time of the year and the major holidays are coming up.

Food is always welcome, but it is the other things that are also needed.  Soaps, hand and laundry are the shortest items.

Dry animal foods....Dog and cat.

Baby diapers and formula's.

Toothpaste and deodorants.

If you use it...others need it also.

If you are not sure what is needed, stop by and ask and or donate money.  Cash is an easy way for the banks to be able to fulfill an immediate need.

Thanks William, good reminder!   Our church keeps a list similar to this in the back, but when we are not reminded it is easy to ignore the needs of these important groups.

Yes, good points of items needed. We collect the "free" stuff from motels such as the bars of soap, shampoo, lotion, etc - giving to the local women's shelter.

William:  You mentioned one thing in your post... about helping during "the upcoming holidays."

I don't mean to have it look like I am "jumping" on this... but I have many mixed emotions about folks who somehow make sure they help those less fortunate around Thanksgiving and Christmas... and then are not seen until the next Thanksgiving.  People DO get hungrey on the other 363 days of the year.

Hunger, and homelessness is an every-day-thing.  We need to be aware of that.  For three years when I lived in the Washington DC area I volunteered, and then did training for incoming volunteers at the Washington DC Suicide and Crisis Center.  To have a few days then volunteers were tripping over each other... and then the rest of the year to have almost nobody show it... we... and that includes ME as well... we need to know that if WE don't help... there is always a chance that nobody else will.

I think cash goes a long way for most of the food banks.  Anything does help.

Thanks Bill for the reminder that it's never too soon to help our fellow man, we don't have to donate only at the Holidays

I've been told that cash donations are best because the food banks can get what they need and they can get it cheaper than we can, because they buy in bulk quanities.

I have to agree with Karen Anne...I've worked with some local food banks. They somehow manage to get by at this time of the year, but after the first of the year they are left with low reserves and no one seems to care then.

One year, around the holidays, I went to the local grocery store which has a box to deposit your donated food items. There were some fun food items for kids that were on sale really cheap. I bought a bunch of this stuff. I know it's not healthy, but why can't kids have fun...especially if the family is facing hard times. I asked the check out clerk to put these items in the box. She said, "Really! Your joking, right? " NO...I wasn't joking. In spite of her response I didn't feel ashamed about my purchases. I will probably do this again this year.
