Sometimes you just have to have proof
that you are telling the truth.
One of my employees sent me a picture of a broken window at an apartment community, the text said “I didn’t do it!” I was puzzled, so I called him to find out more about the window. When I called he said that he just wanted to show that the window was broken before the rotten wood around the window was replaced. He didn’t want anyone to say that we broke the window.
I have never had this happen yet – being blamed for something that we did not do. But it could happen. In fact, it could easily happen. We do a lot of work in apartment communities; it would just take a bad tenant to claim that we broke the window. We may have to pay for a window that the tenant broke. That got me thinking.
Maybe I should be taking more photos myself. Just today we were replacing bellybands in an apartment community. I notice that the siding was cracked before we started in the area; this hairline crack was probably not noticed before. Now that our work is done, everyone will be looking to see that we did a good job and may very well assume that we did it.
In my line of work, dry rot and water damage repairs, there are always cracks, chips, and dings surrounding our area of repair. I would be taking photos all day long. I wouldn’t be too productive in getting the jobs done. Maybe I shouldn’t worry too much.
Maybe the best thing to do is to continue to do what we have always done. Work carefully and act in a trustworthy fashion. If we are trusted, we will be believed. Of course, we are human and we do make mistakes. We are willing to take responsibility for our errors and correct them.
That sounds more productive to me.
