I took a little vacation to visit my oldest brother in Wisconsin. This is the first time I had the opportunity to visit him in his hometown. He has resided there for about 20+ years, so I think this trip was a little overdue!
My brother and I was able to spend some quality time together. (I am his favorite sister, well... I am his one and only sister).
We went for long walks every morning on some beautiful walking trails. While heading to the trails we enjoyed walking through his neighborhood. I was enjoying the beauty of the historical homes, the manicured landscaping, the enclosed porches (season porches) but then I noticed something!!!! .......
No one had fences around their backyard! What???? I am sorry, I know this is typical for some of the midwest communities, but you have to forgive me I was born and raised in California!
M brother informed me that this was the norm here. It was considered unsociable and disrespectful towards your neighbors if you fenced your backyard. There was some advantages I recognized immediately. The yards were mowed, trimmed and free of clutter. It gave me the warm fuzzy feeling of community, security, and neighborly love. On another positive note, it appears that the “no fence” policy might just assist with keeping the crime rate down.
Talk about a great neighborhood watch program!
The downfall: I wouldn’t go out on the back porch to drink my coffee for fear that my brother’s neighbors would see me in my pj’s.
I believe in life there is always a learning lesson if we recognize it. My lessoned learned:
We have an opportunity to have a “No Fence” policy in our Business
1. Have a sense of pride and representation in our community
2. Be open/honest with our customers/clients.
3. Be respectful to our neighboring businesses
4. Keep an eye out for one another’s interest
5. Be an inviting place where all employees can share their thoughts, ideas, frustrations and accomplishments
6. Enjoy the beauty and individuality of each other
Thank you Wisconsin for opening my eyes to the advantages of having a No Fence Backyard.
