I'm a Realtor. You may kiss my ring.

I do get entertained by having two companies.  On the one side, as an electrical contractor, I get a lot of calls from Realtors who don't know me as a real estate broker.  I almost never tell them I'm a broker until we have thoroughly discussed our electrical business.  It's fun watching how Realtors treat tradesmen.

Today, I had another opportunity to watch a real estate professional.  Our real estate company also Embarrasseddoes property management.  In the past few months, we have been inundated with new property management opportunities.  We've taken on enough that I've had to bring on more people to help us get the properties in shape for tenants.

Even with the additional help, I still don't have enough.  This week, a local contractor was supposed to help us get a property ready for clients to move in Monday, but he got busy and couldn't make it so I loaded up my carpentry tools and headed out to the rental.  I brought staff members along to paint a room, I fixed the drywall before they painted and I replaced five doors that were damaged by the previous tenants.

In the process, a neighbor dropped by to see what we were up to.  I didn't have my Realtor attire on (whatever that is).  He dropped in with his chest puffed out explaining that he was a Realtor and he wanted to know if he could see this property inside.  He bloviated a bit about his business acumen before he told me his name, and I said, "Oh yeah, we recently did that Fannie Mae foreclosure together that was on xxxxxx Road."

I stuck out my hand and said, "I'm Mike Cooper, the broker you worked with on that deal."  I could have bought him for fifty cents.  I picked up that buyer because "this particular Realtor" didn't bother to answer his phone.  When I introduced myself, and he finally realized that I wasn't some clueless carpenter, he totally changed his demeanor and the way he addressed his conversation to me.

Friends, you never know who you're talking to.  Make sure when you come upon ANYONE that you treat them with dignity and respect.  If our profession is going to garner respect, we must share that same level of respect with anyone and everyone we come in contact with.  This guy would have continued to treat me like I was a mindless redneck tradesman until he realized who I was.  Don't be that guy.  We're better than this.

Mike, skip the fifty cents. I would have bought him for a dollar just to have witnessed the look on his face.

Good morning Mike - fantastic story. Shame on people who talk down to tradespeople - not only have they worked hard to perfect their craft, they earn every nickel of their income, many of which are higher than my own.

I bet you saw that a few times, James.  8-)

That doesn't surprise me at all, Kathryn.  The ones who work with me are not pretentious at all.

You know what he's do, Jay.  "Yeah, you shoud treat everybody the same."  He wouldn't even get it.  8-)

That's actually how we got into real estate to start with, Wallace.  With all of the foreclosures and short sales, the need has exploded around here.

It was entertaining for me, Conrad.

It's a sad testimony of our industry, Frank.  Thank goodness for the great agents out there.

It was a bit humorous, Charita.

Our industry wouldn't exist without them, would it W & J?

Hi Mike,

It does boil down to how you want to be treated in any situation.....act that way and you will be fine, unless you like being treated badly, LOL

Mike I read your post from Lynn...and I just had to come over and SUGGEST and tell you AMEN! I can't tell you how often this has happened to me. I too have a day job (building, inspections, platting, state rules, etc) in which many clueless about  the job Realtor's call me asking questions. Then they proceed to act like this guy acted. I have to "nicely" bring their fat heads down a notch or two.

Mike, We should treat all people with respect and never talk down to them. This guy sounds like the type agent you hope you don't have a transaction with.

Hi Mike - You're absolutely right. And it really doesn't matter who they are or what they do. All people deserve to be treated with respect, regardles of whether they're a dressed-down millionaire or someone down on his luck - it's the right way to be.

Mike

This business, and all the related services, is all about relationships and treating others well. Too bad there are folks who make the wrong assumptions, or simply do feel the need or desire to treat others with respect, for whatever reason.

I have worked with a large number tradespeople over the years and have the utmost respect for them and the work they do that we need help with. I sure can't do it and I want to rely on someone I respect to help when I need it.

We see what we want to see. I was at a very well respected restaurant in Carmel Valley this weekend. To put it bluntly, here you will find south of the border laborers who usually work in the kitchen, the hotel, on farms, etc. Wonderful to see, a young lady served us with utter perfection who would not normally be hired for this job. I will go back to that restaurant. The owner is brilliant... as is his food.
