The Crinum Lily - A Stately and Elegant Florida Lover Grows Easily

By
Real Estate Agent with Sailwinds Realty

The Crinum Lily - A Stately and Elegant Florida Lover Grows Easily in Florida’s climate. Pink or white flowers are your choice, and there are varieties that will grow in wet, swampy areas or dry sandy areas.

The Crinum is a bulb and I just read that some bulbs can weigh up to 40 pounds! These, of course, are very old crinums planted many years ago and found at old homesites or cemeteries
according to the University of Florida Extension Service.

Crinum Lily

These easy going lilies can be neglected and still be beautiful; the foliage is stunning even if there are no flowers and it very often takes one to two years before they do flower. There is even a variety that likes to have it’s feet wet and can be planted on the sides of ponds and creeks - known as the swamp lily. The Crinum is also known as Seven Sisters and String Lily.

P.S. This started out as a Speechless Sunday post but I can never give up an opportunity to teach.

Hi Toni,

Each time I get to go to Florida on vacation, I really like to see all the different flowers. We don't have a lot of them here due to the climate. Thanks for sharing the shots of those flowers i normally would not get to see except when I get to go on vacation.

Have a wonderful Sunday in New Port Richey.

Best, Clint McKie

John - I don't know about that. One of the sources I found was the University of Texas (western section). So maybe.

Anita - we like those too :)

Clint - I am glad you enjoy them!

Fred - we are blessed; I love all our flowers and birds too.

Sharon - thank you. I guess I'm just a teacher at heart :)

Richard - I really do enjoy them all.

Toni,  Those are so pretty.  Bet they wouldn't grow in my backyard though.  We are starting to feel fall in the air and the leaves are dropping like crazy.  Soon snow will be on the ground and the flowers will be toast till next year.

A forty pound bulb would be huge, Toni!  I'm fairly certain I have not ever seen or even heard of Crinum Lily.  They are quite lovely aren't they!

Hi Toni.  Your teachings are always interesting!   Different climates have different flowers to offer, so for those of us who aren't usually tropical, your flowers seem very exotic.   I spent the month of October in Australia a couple of years ago, and especially enjoyed the spring flowers.   Some were familiar (azalea, rose) but many I had never seen before.

Roy - thanks for the reblog of the Crinum.

Belinda - sounds sad except I know I'll get to enjoy your Rocky and the snow pictures :)

Carl - it is a beauty.

Jennifer - I have seen a couple that are huge.

Myrl - they are beautiful, and I'm sure the 40# one was very unusual and very ancient.

Mary - thank you!

Dianne - Australia is on my list of things to do. I'm sure it was a wonderful experience. You should post some of the pictures from the trip.
