Finish The Ball Game or Show The Home...

Saturday I was enjoying an SEC college football game between the Georgia Bulldogs and Tennessee Volunteers.  This was a highly anticipated contest between the two schools and one I was looking forward to watching, I had cleared my Saturday for the game and some deserved  down time. The game was fast paced, high scoring and close.

Second quarter I glance down at my phone and notice and email notification from my website. Lead CaptureSomeone ( not anyone I had ever met ) wanted to see a home (not one of my listings) My showing request form allows the viewer to set a schedule that best fits their needs, I noted that Sunday would be suitable but then noticed a note that suggested TODAY would be better AND that they wanted to make an offer.  Say what?   I look up at the quickening pace of the game, then down to my phone and message, I can feel good and evil tugging at my deepest inner soul...should I stay or should I go?  Enjoy the game and my down day or go show a home to someone I have never met and I don’t even know if they are qualified.  But hey they were on my website and they did email me, ah but this game has me on the edge of my seat.

I open up my Mac, pull the MLS and see its an REO...ugh, Oh but wait, this one is different..clean, new carpet, fresh paint in a great area, attractively priced and nearby.  So I put down the remote, printed out the MLS and made the call.  Yes, I would be happy to show you that home TODAY!  What time is convenient for you?  Great, I will see you in 30 minutes!  Shall I bring a contract or are you just looking for now?  Yes, please bring a contract!  Wholly cow Batman..can this really be? Touchdown

Fast forward one hour, I have met this great couple and showed them a pristine REO home and they LOVE IT!  And for the naysayers, yes they were pre-approved and  no I didn't give them the 3rd degree before showing the home.  We wrote the contract on the spot!

Moral of my story is priorities! Do I Finish the Ball Game or Show the Home?   What are yours?  I may have missed watching a touchdown but my choices and efforts sure scored one.

Congratulations,  I guess we live dangerously in St. Thomas, but if we did not meet people from an internet connection without the third degree we would have no business at all.  When I was in sales with Eastman Kodak we used to call these blue birds. They just kind of fly in, yeah!

John, if you're asking what I would have done...I would show the property as you did.  Fact is that the outcome of that or any game is not going to impact your life in the least...unless you have a few grand on the game and watching isn't going to change anything.  That customer/client may well impact your life and bottom line.

John, I was watching my AZ Cardinals play on Sunday, and the game had gone into overtime - the other team had the ball, so it was Sudden Death - any score would end the game!  Of course - my phone rings!!!  It's a customer who needs to schedule an event for later in the week.  I don't need to go anywhere at that moment, but he wants to tell me a story....EGAD!  I step outside the front door and handle the call.  I was able to confirm the details, hear out the customer, set an appointment, and get back to the game in time to see my team win!

Yes, WIN-WIN!  And I updated my calendar notes during the instant replay.

Glad you got this one.  One of the benefits of always recording my games and playing them back from the DVR later is I don't have to put the fun before a deal.  nice work!

Yes, you have to listen to your inner voice. They were ready and if you hadn't gone, maybe they would have called someone else. Now THAT would have made you feel bad. In a past life, my then broker didn't answer a certain call. She called another agent who was willing to drop everything for the $1.2 million contract instead of him. The buyer has also given all her other business to this agent who was willing to help her when SHE needed it. Lesson learned.

John, this one can go either way, if you ask me. Sometimes they'll wait, sometimes I'll do what I can to accommodate.

Well, I have had a few. I will think of the best one that I have had and post for you.

When doing real estate for 30 years, you do have a few to share. Thanks for bringing a bit of humor in our lives on this one.

You took a chance with this couple and it is great that it paid off!  I wish that all of these last minute buyers had an ending like this one.

Thank goodness my only "down time" TV shows are on after 7 at night.  However......... even I might have moved with the speed of lightning at this opportunity.  Great job, John.

Good for you, John -- besides, that's what TIVO is for!!  You can see the touchdown later ... but you were smart to show this home and write the offer -- bravo!!

Glad this turned out well. I am usually a bit cynical of last minute showing requests if I haven't worked with them before.

Hi John, I am late getting over here, but I know I would have done the same thing. You scored Big by deciding to take the time to show this home vs watching the football game. These kind of opportunities don't come everyday, and you made the right move.
