Shrimping in Hernando Beach, Florida

The Hernando Beach, Florida, area is known as a residential boating community with its beautiful waterfront homes where you can have your boat docked right behind your home.

A little known fact is that Hernando Beach is also home to a shrimping fleet that produces no less than 25% of all bait shrimp that is sold in Florida.  Thus, although far from being a major industrial port, shrimping in Hernando Beach contributes a great deal to the local economy.

If you happen to live on one of the main canals in Hernando Beach, you can watch the shrimp boats go out in the evening and come back in the early morning hours with their catch.

Aside from several bait shops that serve the sports fishing community, there are also a couple of fish markets located in Hernando Beach that offer fresh gulf fish and shrimp.

Shrimping in Hernando Beach, Florida, it's just another aspect of waterfront living!

Silvia: Hernando Beach sounds like my kind of place to live. If I were able to be in Florida, I would definitely consider waterfront living there. Imagine, your own boat docked outside your home? Fresh seafood right off the boat?

Reminds of Forrest Gump.  25% of the country's shrimp harvest is very significant.  Pretty pictures.  Best of luck to you Silvia.

Hi Silvia, This was very interesting and I have never seen the shrimp boats there, though I lived in Fla. for a time. Very interesting and fun to share the local industries that help support an area.

When i hear the word "shrimping", I can't help but think of Forrest Gump Silvia.

I can imagine the shrimping can add a lot to the local economy.

Silvia, great information for Hernando Beach and being 25% of the shrimp bait used is a lot!     It would be fun watching the boats come in every evening!

Hella, fresh seafood is a great benefit of living close to the water!

Kwee, most people who live here don't even realize that fact.

Jerry, thanks, it's 25% of Florida's bait shrimp production (not the country's, that would be huge!).

William, there are many different businesses and industries that make up a local economy, some small some larger, all of them are playing a vital part.

Ron and Alexandra, it's not what anyone would expect or normally much talk about.

Tom, Forrest Gump is one of my all time favorite movies!

Joan, they actually go out at night because shrimp are caught at night.  It must be difficult to navigate in total darkness but it also must be awesome to be out there alone with the stars.

Roy, I love shrimp any way you prepare them!
