NYC murders way down in 2012. Homicides in city are down 18% from 2011. While 3 months remain in 2012 records show murder rate among the lowest seen since World War II.

NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly is scheduled today to tell a meeting of international police chiefs in San Diego that a new NYPD initiate "Operation Crew Cut" aimed at informal street gangs could drive homicides even lower than they are now.

As of September 30, the murder rate in New York was 3.86 with population of 8.24 million. In 1940, the rate was 3.68, when the city saw at least 275 homicides and had a population of 7.45 million.

In the last two decades, New York City has seen an unprecedented reduction in crime. NYC for several years now ranks as the nation's safest big city. Among the top ten most populous states in the U.S., New York ranks first - with less than half the number of crimes per 100,000 residents as Florida.

Kudos to NYPD New York's Finest!

Hi Mitchell,

Sure a good post and I am sure NYPD and their commanders have a lot to do with the lower homicide rates.  So many people never think about the men and women who are out taking reports, finding burglars, arresting people and just making their presence known to help keep crime rates down. Great info Mitchell.

New York City is such a wonderful metropolis.  It is great that they have managed to get crime down like they have.  I've heard of others address that fact in amazement.

Hi Sheila, Thank you. It is good news.

Hi Peggy, Those people have either never been to NY or were last here in the 70's.

Hi Kristin, Thank you. Our men and woman in blue work very hard keeping the city safe.

Myrl, Police and criminologists have theorized factors  such as concentration of officers in crime spots, better trauma treatment at local hospitals and changes in society account for fewer murders. I also believe contrary to the NRA's talking points gun control reduces crime and murders. Guns kill people!

Ellen, I have always felt safe in NYC  particularly compared to other places I've lived and have visited.

Mitchell, 42nd St. is nothing like it was in the '70's. It's really been cleaned up and I love spending time in the city.
