NYC murders way down in 2012. Homicides in city are down 18% from 2011. While 3 months remain in 2012 records show murder rate among the lowest seen since World War II.
NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly is scheduled today to tell a meeting of international police chiefs in San Diego that a new NYPD initiate "Operation Crew Cut" aimed at informal street gangs could drive homicides even lower than they are now.
As of September 30, the murder rate in New York was 3.86 with population of 8.24 million. In 1940, the rate was 3.68, when the city saw at least 275 homicides and had a population of 7.45 million.
In the last two decades, New York City has seen an unprecedented reduction in crime. NYC for several years now ranks as the nation's safest big city. Among the top ten most populous states in the U.S., New York ranks first - with less than half the number of crimes per 100,000 residents as Florida.
Kudos to NYPD New York's Finest!
