weigh in on aging in place

Weigh-In on Aging-in-Place-
You don't have to be old to live in accessible home.

Do you like the idea of planning ahead for aging-at home?  We sure do. And we are not alone. Spearheading a trend, baby boomers are remodeling for aging-in-place according to the National Association of Home Builders. The NAHB defines aging-in-place as

“remaining in one’s home safely, independently, and comfortably, regardless of age, income or ability level.”

Basic home modifications and well-designed products can facilitate aging at home.

At our home, one of the first things we did was add grab bars in the bathroom.

These are not "ordinary" grab bars, mind you. They are sturdy yet elegant-looking accessories. By adding them we feel confident that we have decreased the chances of falling on wet and slippery surfaces.

Medical Costs from Falls are in the BILLIONS! (yes, I said BILLIONS$$)

According to The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, direct medical costs from falls are in the billions? Yes. Billions!

Here’s a question that comes up for me:  Given those billions, could it reduce costs to include vouchers for grab bars as part of a medical care insurance program? Let me know what you think.

Hi janeAnne -

You are really excelling on this subject.  Debbie is far from elderly but she has requested I install her a grab bar at the jetted tub.  She fell last Christmas and broke her foot step into the tub.  Never to young or old to think safety.

I'm not "there" yet.  Not in my house I will age in.  My next house will be and yes, we will plan for it.  This past year my parents built their "last" house and I made them do a few things differntly.  Initially they didn't want a bedroom window (second floor) to open to the screened in porch, but I forced the issue.  One never knows when the window will be a fire escape route and to the porch with steps seemed better than jumping to a lower floor.  Turns out they LOVE their oversized screened porch.  Win Win

janeAnne, we bought our home from a couple who were 89 years old. They had already fitted many of the things for thier age. We've left many of them so that they'll be there when we need them.

HI Mark~ Maybe not so wise until your hair turns white? I know a white-haired Diva who might agree with that... she would definitely like one of those grab bars in the photo here

HI Tammy~ I SO like your new photo! I agree with you about planning ahead. I have often wondered how I would work with our home if my parents came to live with us...

This is a grat idea, janeAnne.  They don't even have to look like grab bars.  That corner piece is really lovely.  Who would know.  It adds an elegant touch.

JaneAnne~having worked in longterm care for 10 years before getting into real estate, I can certainly vouch for the astronomical amounts of money that are spent on medically oriented bills as well as the HUGE need for prevention for we Baby Boomers who will essentially be paying for this with our parents and ourselves...paying out-of-pocket as well as paying emotionally when we hear of a loved one being seriously injured in their own homes simply by falling in the shower--a very common occurence.

I actually sold a home here at Fishhawk Lake to a couple and the wife fell in the shower years ago at her old home and had such severe head trauma that she could no longer work and has permanent memory loss as a result--and she was our age!

Good for you for posting this.

Gayle~

First of all thanks for your work in longterm care. Having been a part of this myself for the years we cared for Dad, I understand the energy and caring involved.

TAHNKS too, for your kind comment.
