I honestly believe that 99.9% of people of the planet would have given up in the first 6 months, probably by the first show if they had tried to create the Super Company which is now Epic Fighting. In Seeking advice to make my vision a reality, my First words of encouragement included: “If you can afford to lose $50k-$100k per show for the first 10 shows then go for it”, “Look at all the people who were successful at it in other states and then came to San Diego and lost their butts”, “San Diego has too much going on, it’s too hard to get a big enough crowd to make it work”, “You need sponsors to make it work and companies just aren’t doing well enough to sponsor and if they did have the money, they wouldn’t sponsor a Mixed Martial Arts Promotion company” and my favorite,” it’s never been done before, no one can crack the San Diego egg”
I’ll be honest; I came close to quitting before I ever really got started. I had wondered why so many people would push so hard to have a show and then quit just before the show happened. It’s because they came to the reality that they were going to lose tons of money going through with the show and they decided to cut their losses. The comfort of just sticking to real estate which was working just fine sounded so much easier and so safe. I thought about it real hard and decided:
1) The fact that no one had done it should be more motivating.
2) The thought of creating a business that will create exposure for fighters and businesses, entertainment for fans, and opportunities for staff was too exciting to let pass.
3) If I fail the lessons will be endless and no degree can give you that kind of education. And finally
4) I had already invested $4000 and even though I could easily lose another $50k, I was too cheap to just let $4000 go down the drain without a fight.
I was motivated by the idea of creating a Million dollar Company that would create so many opportunities, but just as motivating was the fear of failure. Fear can be amazing when used as a motivator instead of paralyzing. I would occasionally wake up between midnight and 2 am from a dream that no one came to see the Epic Fighting Show. Instead of lying there worried, I would sneak out while my family was asleep and put blanket the City of San Diego with posters and flyers. Keep in mind my day starts at no later than 7am and I’m usually doing Real Estate by 8:30am. If it were a hobby, I would have chose sleep, but since I was passionate about the project I did what I had to do to make it happen. People who dabble are rarely successful no matter the skills and natural talent.
