If it's time to sell your home you have already figured out that the task to get it ready is enormous. If you are like me then you know how pets rule the home. Quinn was the best, but he did give our house a few "lived in" upgrades.
When selling your home think about what a potential buyer may see and smell when they walk through the front door. Does the house have increased wear and tear? You may not be so objective, and Fluffy has left a few carpet stains that may be problem for new owners. Fido scratched the paint off the backdoor. Maybe not a huge problem, but it could cost you more money if not fixed prior to listing.
Examine your home for fur, dirt and scratches on the floors, woodwork and walls. Make the effort to examine where Lulu chewed on something. Fix it, replace it or paint it. Take a close look at the exterior of your home too, as the screens or doors could be broken or clawed. Your landscaping should be cleaned as much as possible. Most important, the yard should never have anything left behind that a buyer could “step in”. That just screams “time to leave” to a potential buyer.
Be sure to include shampooing carpets and clean curtains before the first showing of your home. Pet odors can linger and while you may not notice, a buyer that enters your home for the first time will find a pet odor the fastest reason to leave before giving the home a chance. Don’t expect to spray air freshener or burn candles to mask the scent. The two together are deadly.
Consider where your pets will be during showings. No pets should be left in the home. Think safety for all involved and liability. Remove all the toys, food and water dishes and even pet bedding. The less seen will keep a buyer from knowing that a pet lives in this house. Kitty litter should never be seen.Empty frequently so that any odor does not linger in the home. It needs to not only be out of sight, but out of smelling range.
You certainly don’t want to decrease your ability to sell, so take a few extra steps before listing your home and make sure that buyers will see a “well cared for” home.
