The Importance of Networking with Active Professionals.  This is going to be a simplistic post however in life many of the most effective items are very simple.

We have all likely all heard the phrase ‘your network is your net worth’.  There is truth in that statement however it is directly linked to your ability to take action.  The ability to make things happen sounds so simple yet is oftentimes our biggest obstacle.

I was at a conference this past weekend where I heard a statement about this not being a weekend to be shy.  Being shy and networking don’t tend to go hand in hand very well.  At this particular event, there was a large number of active investors who were making things happen day in and day out.  It was a privilege to meet and network with tons of people and I look forward to seeing what relationships develop from everyone I met.  True win-win’s will come out of it I suspect.

The key was very simple.

1)    Don’t be shy.  If you don’t talk, no one will know what you are up to.  I know many people who have to work to cross this hurdle however it is well worth the effort.  Don’t be afraid to make a mistake.  Everyone has already made one before you so go for it!

2) Ensure your communication is directed with a focus on connecting.  Don’t be afraid to tell people what you do with confidence.  Let them know how you provide value to your clients.  Let them know how there could perhaps be an opportunity for business and growth if you sense the opportunity exists.  Let them know you can refer them to others if you know people that could benefit from their services.  Listen to what they say intently, share your story and connect whenever a fit exists.

3) Ensure when possible that you are networking with ‘Active’ Professionals.  There are a lot of passive professionals out there.  Some may even have steady work.  But to me, ‘Active’ means they are a mover and shaker, not just a worker.  They are making things happen week in and week out to grow themselves and their business and you know by associating with them, you will learn something at a bare minimum that will propel you forward.  Seek out these people.

I, like many people have been shy in the past and can safely say opportunities were missed as a result.  It is a continued effort for us not-so-outgoing folks to connect with others.  However when the effort is put forward, it is amazing what the results can be.  This past weekend was a reminder of that for me.

So whether you are a Real Estate Investor, Agent, Contractor, Appraiser, Loan Officer, Broker or any other kind of professional, get out there and network.  You’ll be glad you did and opportunities will come your way!
