Making Our Homes Safer As We Age
We are never to young or to old to begin thinking of ways to make our home safer. janeAnne has some good information on safe proofing our homes. Something as simple as a grab bar can prevent a fall and serious injury. Please leave your comments on janeAnne's page.
Weigh-In on Aging-in-Place-
You don't have to be old to live in accessible home.
Do you like the idea of planning ahead for aging-at home? We sure do. And we are not alone. Spearheading a trend, baby boomers are remodeling for aging-in-place according to the National Association of Home Builders. The NAHB defines aging-in-place as
“remaining in one’s home safely, independently, and comfortably, regardless of age, income or ability level.”
Basic home modifications and well-designed products can facilitate aging at home.
At our home, one of the first things we did was add grab bars in the bathroom.These are not "ordinary" grab bars, mind you. They are sturdy yet elegant-looking accessories. By adding them we feel confident that we have decreased the chances of falling on wet and slippery surfaces.

Medical Costs from Falls are in the BILLIONS! (yes, I said BILLIONS$$)
According to The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, direct medical costs from falls are in the billions? Yes. Billions!
Here’s a question that comes up for me: Given those billions, could it reduce costs to include vouchers for grab bars as part of a medical care insurance program? Let me know what you think.
