It Will Be A Long Winter

161 games over six months, and for 3 teams in the Active Rain Baseball Junkies Fantasy Baseball League, it all comes down to tonight.

The lead has see-sawed back and forth for the last two weeks. This morning when we woke up, Bill Feela’s Minnesota Rain was in first place; my husband Doug-who TORTURED me last year with his ‘advice’- was a point and a half back, while my Good Guys were 4 points back.

But it could be anyone’s win tonight…two of us had bad pitching today, and my team  the other one of us is having a decent day of both hitting and pitching (hee-hee).

Regardless of how it all shakes out, it’s been a blast, and I thank all the managers who participated: From Tracy CA, Susan “Team Princess” Golding, and her co-manager Reily; AR’s own Kerrie “Yanks All the Way” Greenlaugh, and Carey NC prodigy Craig “Raleigh Carey Apex” Rutman.

Stanislaus county’s CA finest Jim “Jim’s Team” Patton; from sunny South Brevard county FL Jeff “JD’s Mets” DiMuria; from rainyWestchester county NY Phil “J Train” Faranda. Last but not least, the original founder of the AR Baseball Junkies-the pride of Columbia River Gorge, Mel ‘Tinkers2Ever2Chance” Ahearn…and MEL-one of these days, you’re going to have to explain that team name!

It's been a great season...and only 135 more days til the start of Spring Training!!

I don't "get" the fantasy sports but it is a craze that everyone in my office (except me) is involved in.  GO TEAM!

Good morning Marie. I don't get the fantasy sports thing either. I guess it's simply a matter of preferences. Enjoy your day.

Hi Marie,

Thanks for being the Commish this year (and next too I hope).

Your question on my team name --> Tinkers to Evers to Chance was a Chicago Cubs double play combination in the early 1900's.  All of them are in the Hall of Fame.  A poem was written about Tinkers to Evers to Chance describing a NY Giant fan's consternation about them turning a double play against his team.

These are the saddest of possible words:
"Tinker to Evers to Chance."
Trio of bear cubs, and fleeter than birds,
Tinker and Evers and Chance.
Ruthlessly pricking our gonfalon (pennant) bubble,
Making a Giant hit into a double –
Words that are heavy with nothing but trouble:
"Tinker to Evers to Chance."

And here is a trivia question hardly anyone will know unless thye are a die-hard Cubs fan.  Who was the last Cubs manager to win the World Series?  1908, Frank Chance, player and manager.

One of our dogs, who we got from the shelter is called Chance; his full name is Tinkers to Evers to Chance since he got a 2nd chance with us and I wanted a baseball name for him.  Used the same for all of my baseball fantasy teams too given Gretchen has the creativity in the family.

Take care,
Mel

My Rangers feel apart. I guess more appropriate would be to say that the pitching staff broke down and fell apart.

Marie, as you well know I opted out of the "Baseball Junkies...", but stopping by and reading your post I was intrigued to hear what Mel's answer would be to why or what is "Tinker2Ever2Chance".  As a Chicago boy I don't ever remember this.  Glad I stopped by.

John-continued success!

Janna-it's just fun to be part of things!

Sheila! Have missed seeing my friends int he Rain-thanks for stopping by!

Mel-I LOVE that story !What a great experience this league has been...although this was the first year to have started a 'tradition', seems fitting that the winner is the next years' commish...Bill was interested anyway, so it's perfect. But I'll be back!! Maybe Doug...and I think Nick might be warming to the idea too :)

Than it was a funny year...a lot of injuries early on, then just lingering things that felled the rest of them. Think about 2013, and if you're interested in the league, let Bill (Feela) know now. We went from 6 to 10 this year, and think next year we may approach the max league size.

Thanks for stopping by Steve!

NICK-Bill will contact you next spring :) But you're right, Mel's is a great story. LOVE the stuff you can learn here in the rain!
