The Marineland Right Whale Project celebrated it's seven year anniversary of it's first whale sighting on Friday, January 18th with sightings of two mothers and calf's!

The first pair were sighted by one of the Projects survey volunteers who was at her post near "Clicker Beach" which is close to Hammock Dunes in Palm Coast at about 9:30AM.

Joy and the response team arrived soon after and confirmed that the pair were a mom and baby. I mentioned before that when I've seen a mom with her calf, I didn't get to see much animation out of either of them, at the most a wave from the baby.

Read more about the animated calf and the other sighting here

Photo above is of Arpeggio and her calf and was taken by Joy Hampp and is property of The Marineland Right Whale Project, used with their permission.

They are marvelous creatures and when we went to Canada we could see them off the coast and it was awesome. I'll have to see if I can dig up the pictures.

Wow, Lysa!  That's great!  I would love to see them 'up close and personal' and grab a couple photos.  They are truly remarkable creatures.

Lysa, This is so interesting and must be a facinating site.  I have been to PTown several times and gone out on a boat to whale watch, it's so much fun!

Great news Lysa!  Now that bush has waved his magic pen and is now allowing the Navy to use sonar when marine mammals are present we should begin seeing them really up close and personal, like on the beach where they end up when they get disoriented )-:  Hopefully that mom and baby will escape that fate.

That's a great shot... it's so hard to get a good one.  Are right whales the same as humpbacks?

Georgia, That photo is courtesy of the Marineland Right Whale Project and taken by Joy Hampp. She has a exellent camera and lens! The Northern Right Whales and Humpbacks are not the same, but I believe are both Baleen Whales. Its hard to tell them apart, the humpack has a small fin on its back and the right whale does not. We get both here off our coast.

Thanks for coming by!
