Question: Posting Website Links

Let me start off by saying that I'm a marketing person.  I tell my clients that they should put a link to their website on everything that goes out with their name on it.  The more people see it, the more visible it is, the more chances that someone will click through and check out your site.

Having said that, I read a post today that stated you should not put your website link on comments to other people's blog posts.  So, as a newbie to AR, I thought I'd ask the question where I could get a good idea of the general consensus.

When you see someone's website link in their comment post, does it make you feel as though they are only commenting so that they can "fish for business"?  Do you feel it is inappropriate to put your website link at the end of your comment posts?  Or do you think it is ok to post your website link when commenting on other people's blogs?

I'm looking forward to your responses.  When in Rome...

I think this is one of the AR god's rules -- and I don't know if it is negotiable.  When members do comment you can click on their name to get to their profile -- I tend to think the links to the web site should be left out of the comments.

I would agree with that. Even without the website link, readers can click into the signature link and get the details anyway. People do business with people that they admire, respect, like or were referred to.

Personally, I am ambivalent on the subject.  But that may be because I know that I can always click on your "More about me . . ." link and usually find your contact info and website if I need it.  I'm more interested in the blog content and tend to skip over that that are only "selling" rather than engaging in the dialog.

Interesting...I put my web address on everything. I even use it when responding to other posts.

I am anxious to see how other people fell about that.

I look forward to reading more responses.

www.isell.....oops, there I go again. LOL.

Howdy Renae

Active Rain rules say do not advertise yourself on other folks blogs. Buy puting your website link in a comment that you make on someones blog post, that is a form of advertising yourself on other folks blogs.

I hope this helps with your question.

Have a good one

Hi Renae ~ I am glad you asked this question because it shows you care. It took me a long time to realize I could put my business name with my last name in my profile and it would show up with my name without offending anyone. It is what everyone is doing now and it helps to know who you are without selling yourself too loudly. Let me know if you need help doing this.

Renae - I rarely put links into my comments, unless it's a link to a very relevant place. We're all very sensitive to "advertising". If we want to know more, we can always click on your name to get to your profile, to get to your blog. You can also use your "name" creatively as Sheron mentioned. In my opinion, relevant link is ok, link to you "advertising" you is not ok.  For the first several months I was posting on ActiveRain I'd always put in a link at the bottom, but then I stopped.

Yes, folk can visit your profile and see your information and your home website.  That is good!  I don't approve of the link in the comment section.  Common Courtesy and that is the way AR has been. (Don't care what the newbies upstarts think ;-)

I think the consensus is that putting a link to your own website in your comments is seen more as advertising yourself than anything else.  Based on that, I won't do that anymore!

I wonder if this goes for tag lines as well...  I usually put Market 4 Real! after my name on all comments I post.  Would that go the same route as your website link?

Thanks for the comments everyone!

Well, I just started here at AR and I'm ok with it. We are all in sales and marketing and you should not get upset because someones web address is on the post.

If the people have spoken, then let it be rule! Thanks for posting a subject I needed to know Renae

Renae - See that little delete button down there on the bottom of each comment some use it to delete your comments when you put a link in it.  When a comment is deleted you also loose the points you earned by commenting. The comment section is just that a comment section I don't believe it was meant as a place for you to promote yourself. (I learned the hard way)
