SHE LOST A CLIENT DUE TO HER CLEAVAGE!

I received an interesting call the other day. A long-time client had a friend who was looking for an agent in The Woodlands. My sweet friend of course referred them to me. Upon meeting the new client, we had a very interesting dialogue.
They went on to explain that they had met another agent here and were so shocked to see her literally "busting" out of her clothing. They said that it was truly in your face and obnoxious. They agreed to meet with her one other time and once again, there they were, the twins up on a platter!
They just agreed that the agent did not appear professional and that this bothered them too much to continue working with her. How unfortunate that this young lady lost out on some business because she is presenting herself in a less than professional light. Well, at least the profession of real estate!
Major lesson for all of us...we are not only judged by the way we perform but also how we look on the job. A professional image is important. It may be trendy to wear low-cut blouses yet I would agree that this is not the professional image we want to see when choosing a professional.
Perhaps it is time to assess how we look before we walk out of the door? Is that skirt too short, blouse too low cut, outfit too tight? Image is important and yes, people are looking at you!

Some male buyers might not ever find the perfect home if they thought they could ride around with "the girls" in full view all day! LOL! These comments are so interesting!
Dear Paula,
Never had that problem as a pleasantly boring dresser.
I see this a lot around here, even in the advertising. I feel that I am at a distinct disadvantage in area of marketing.
There is someone in my office who wears 6" heels, bust-busting blouses and short tight skirts. What is she thinking? Just don't get it.
My daughter used to work at a famous higher end men's and women's clothiers. After she left, we still shopped their sales. One day, one of the girls was on the clock in shorts, sports bra, (visible,) and spaghetti-strap tank top, with midrift showing. Good grief. I walked right up to the manger and complained; this was inapropriate and disrespectful, I said. Her job isn't about promoting her personal standards or her ideas; it's about representing the standards of the company, and making sure everyone can be comfortable around her. How can she do that dressed like that? How can she "represent the company" when she looks like she's on her lunch hour? A beach volleyball lunch hour! She wasn't happy about it, but her manager did insist the clerk rerturn home, and change her clothes.
Seriously, it's just rude. It's a shame companies need written dress codes. It should be second nature to look respectful and appropriate in whatever situation you're in, especially when at work!
The girls are busting out all over huh? Well, when did a mucho push up bra become part of the Realtors wardrobe? I have to agree that some people just take it too far but for some reason I am also reading into it as her clothes were also too tight - like she was at a bar trolling for ??
You know today I was in a situation where a very nice lady was giving advice & she had tatoos all over her front. Not just one, but MANY. I had a hard time taking her seriously because I just couldn't get what she was hoping to tell me with those tatoos. Hope that makes sense. No matter what she wore I'm not sure those tatoos helped her credibility.
Wow! Don't think that I have ever received so many comments. Many of them have been delightfully entertaining to say the least. Love Cynthia Larsen's comment about having some "skin in the game"! Too funny!
I'm a culprit of wearing jeans, they are so comfy, despite the recommendations of my business partner and girlfriend. I keep the guns put away though as not to scare anyone - LOL!
Regarding the Hillary photo, it's hard not to look at someone's cleavage...like a train wreck. Just because you are forced to look does not mean you like. Anyway I agree that we should check ourselves in the mirror for how we are going to be perceived by the way we look on any given day.
A few years ago I was interviewing agents to sell my mother's home (in a market than mine). One agent (a mature woman) during the interview was constantly pulling down her skirt and covering her blouse top with her hand. It was totally annoying and I wondered why she didn't wear clothes where this would be unnecessary. I thought that if she didn't have any more sense than that I needed to find someone else and did so.
Excellent post, because you stated a fact...that it actually caused someone to lose a client...instead of just an opinion. I've often seen the Christina Aguilera look on a professional and think it's very inappropriate. I often wonder how the rest of the public views that individual.
If you'd wear it to a nightclub, don't wear it to work. If you'd wear it to clean your house, don't wear it to work. Seems simple, but common sense seems to escape some. Sheesh!
Makes sense. The twins can and do always get in the way. Cover up. it WILL cost you money.
Sales 101, your selling a product and a service. No distractions needed to loose the deal or give the client a rason not to buy.
Greg Nino #64 always says what is on his mind…when others may not be so provocative.
Some comments showing “too much cleavage” is unprofessional. So…how much cleavage is allowed and where is the line drawn between acceptable cleavage and “too much”?
Karen Ann Stone #106 commented that “…many women are not keeping abreast of the latest trends in how to dress…” (Italics are mine.)
Thanks for the post. It was the breast best reading today!
And agents that dress like they are 20 and going clubbing can't figure out why they do not get business. As a woman, I wouldn't feel threatened like someone mentioned above. It's not about feeling threatened. I look at it as they are compensating for lack of knowledge thinking dressing with the girls hanging out will serve them better. NOT!
This is great Paula! I have not seen this type that often but it was MEMORABLE! pippa
I remember the story of the girl who was kicked off an airplane (and I think it was Southwest) because of her "inappropriate clothing." I thought that was a bit drastic - after all she was a paying customer and what flight attendant took on the job of fashion (or good taste) police?
I've seen my share of inappropriately dressed agents and wonder how they can stay in the business (and maybe they don't). When I first started in real estate 29 years ago dressing professionally was always something I took care with. I even complained to my broker when I would see agents doing floor time in jeans (not nice jeans - although I never wear jeans with clients). I felt they were not representing our brokerage in a professional manner.
I think its a lesson we all need to remember. We are not always judged upon our competance, but appearance demeanor and other criteria we may not even be aware of.
We are all judged by our appearance right off the bat. It's called "curb appeal". :>) She is not naive on the affect her dress style has on other people.
