Let there be Light!

You can't sell your house in the Dark!

As the days get shorter and the nights longer, good lighting is even Let there be lightmore important when you're trying to sell your house.

Good space and light sell houses.

 1. Start with the Windows. Natural light will make a house look brighter throughout. Wash windows and remove or open heavy window treatments. Blinds should be Let there be lightpulled all the way up to allow the most amount of light into the house.

2. Clean the light fixtures, including the light bulbs. When all of the lights are on, the dust and cobwebs show well. Dust lampshades as well.

3. Replace dated light fixtures. Updating light fixtures is one of the most inexpensive ways to perk up an older home. Let there be light

4. Increase the Wattage. Use the highest wattage possible in the fixtures to brighten the interior of the home. This time of year the days are shorter and lighting is very important to show off the best features of a home.

In some cases, such as sconces in a bathroom, a slightly lower wattage will give a softer feel. Bright lights reflect off the mirrors and often have a harsher effect. Then finally...

5. Use clear bulbs when possible. They are brighter at the same wattage than their opaque counters.

For an added touch, instead of baking bread or cookies, put a drop of Vanilla Extract on a light bulb that will be left on. It'll leave a subtle aroma that's attractive and NOT over powering!

Great tips, be sure and choose the right light bulb too.I have tan walls, and when I use the wrong one my walls look yellow. Using the right ones, makes my rooms look brighter and the right color!

Connie- such a helpful post!  Even here in sunny Florida we have cloudy days.  Those clean windows and bright lights help to keep up the spirits as well.  Lenn does have a point, though.... now the dust shows even more!

Lenn - I agree but really, the house should be well dusted before we put it on the market!

Caron - I love a bright home. Makes me smile.

Kathy - The cloudy days are what got me thinking about how gloomy the homes look this time of year. Get that duster out and get busy! LOL

Great reminders, Connie.  And, if lights are on a timer ... it's important to adjust the settings on those as well since it's getting dark earlier these days.

Carie - I didn't even think of that. Yes, of course they'd need to be adjusted!

Conrad - On these gloomy, rainy days a dark house is so unappealing.

Hi Connie, Yes putting light on the situation is so important.  Nothing worse than going into a dark place and turning on switches with no response.
