What's Blooming in October Denver to Boulder?

By
Real Estate Agent with The DiGiorgio Group

Here between Denver and Boulder we've already had our first hard frost, and even a dusting of snow. But the snow melted within minutes of the sun's rising, and today is forecast to be 70 degrees.

That's typically what happens in autumn between Dener and Boulder -  all the more tender plants like tomatoes and peppers are killed off and then we have a few more weeks of summer-like temperatures.  I tried covering mine this year but did a shoddy job of it and it didn't work.  Will try harder next year!

But here's a summary of the flowering plants that did survive the frost, and which will bloom for at least two or three weeks more.

Clematis 'durandii'

This clematis truly does bloom from spring through first frost, which has not happened yet this year!

Russian Sage

Butterfly bush
Some mums - the variety of colors they come in is fun to use
OK - not a bloom, but how lovely they are!
Sooooo tasty!
Agastache

Joetta:  Sounds like your cold weather is just a little more advanced than ours here in Chicagoland.  We're down in the 30's a couple times, but no snow .. at least as of yet.  This is one race I'll be happy to let you win!  Snow and driving in it will come soon enough.  And I'll be happy to enjoy all the beautiful plants you describe just a bit longer too ...

Joetta, a very colorful and fragrant selection I am sure. We still have tomatoes and eggplants in our garden, even though its getting cold.

Gene - It gets chilly fast here, Coloradans must be adaptable! But I think that, overall, Chicago is colder. At least that's what we like to believe!

Ellen  - it's nice to have color as long as possible.  In the winter here, even the grass turns brown. I grew up in Oregon, where there is so much green all winter so I miss that.

Hi Joetta,

Your have some nice colored photos there but I think the red apple picture is my favorite. Hope they last a few more weeks until the big freeze. Thanks for sharing with us. I just joined this group so I am excited to post in here soon.

I'm hoping to get out there to pick the last of those apples.  My daughter said one of them is so shiny and red, it looks like the famous 'poisoned apple'.  I guess Halloween is having an effect on her!
