Here is the final question in the Test Your Green IQ test:
4. Toilets are the biggest water hogs in the home. TRUE!
According to the EPA, toilets account for 27 percent of the water used in your household, followed by washing machine (22 percent), the shower (17 percent), faucets (16 percent) and leaks (14 percent). To save water, replace your old one. Toilets made before 1994 use between 3.5 and 7 gallons of water per flush, compared to 1.6 gallons for newer ones. And, special high efficiency models use 20 percent less than that. Installing one can save a family of four around $90 a year on water bills. Or, put in a toilet dam, which costs less than $8, inside the tank of a dated commode. This product reduces space that can be filled with water, preserving about a gallon per flush.
