24 Comments on World Mental Health Day-October 10-And, Just How Are YOU Doing?
Morning Kathy I was issued some medication for depression a couple of months ago. I just can't imagine being depressed for a long period of time.
Kathy - I can understand seasonal affective depression; I get down if we have a few overcast days.
Good reminder of the assistance available for mental health.
Have a great day and an outstanding week. Be sure to have your camera in hand to capture the special moments.
I can't imagine having long term depression. I think we have all had a bouts but we "get over it." Major depression is something that requires a real support network,
Kathy... Mental health is a difficult topic. Many feel it is just an excuse to not get out of bed each day... but for those that suffer it is very real and painful... Thanks for sharing Kathy..
Kathy, depression does affect many people, and some have it worse than others. Did not know it was World Mental Health Day, great local post.
Good morning Kathy-there is so much hidden depression in the world today-some of it chronic, some of it episodic and some of it circumstantial. But, there are so many more resources available that no one should suffer.
Kathy, My mom was in the mental health business as she was a practicing psychologist. Even she had problems with depression but she recognized it and got help herself.
Good morning Kathy. This is a good reference for many and there is no shame in needing and getting help. No rehearsal for sure.
I really need to find a site with all these great days/info like you! Love it...I think I am fine in the head, although some might disagree LOL
Hello Kathy -- the subject of depression is one that is often difficult to bring up for many but the seriousness of the illness is one that needs discussion.
Kathy-What Michael says is so true. Depression is often a taboo subject but there is so much more than we realize. I never knew until I started reading your blog how many things have their own day.
Kathy,
Depression is real, and we know so many people that are on anti depression drugs. It really helps them cope with their lives. A
Dorie- It's something you realize the older you get!
BARFF- see.. you've danced your dance your whole life! Good for you.
John (QMan)- thankfully depression is being recognized as something that is a serious condition and one that can be helped.
BarbaraT- exactly! Think of all of the people out there who have suffered through this economic fiasco and without a job, for example, don't have any medical insurance and this is the time when they really need help.
James- take it if they have prescribed it and follow the instructions. I've known friends who've been on these drugs for years and they're leading productive and happy lives.
Toni-years ago I bought a stationary bike that came with a light. I had no idea why until I read that it was helpful for those who needed the sun during those long dark days. I also think that's why Vitamin D is often suggested for people with this type of depression.
Roy- hope you're doing better! Your pictures of all of the flowers always brighten my day.
Gary- I agree.. we all can have depressive moments and times in our lives but long term truly requires assistance.
Janis- I think it's hard for anyone who isn't experiencing it to truly understand. I remember when I was in Psych grad school, at 22. How can anyone possibly relate to all of the problems people suffer when you're ony 22 and have lead a relatively boring, normal life.
Joan- I had a friend who was on it for years and I never knew. But, I'm glad she had something and someone to help her
Joanna- I agree. So many years ago, I'd bet many women went to their physicians and were told it was just a "female" thing.
Debbie- good for her. I think so many people are concerned with taking pills but if it can help you along with other support, then why not.
Sheila- you're right about that. You have to be willing to get help.
Kristin- just Google special day calendars and there are several out there that have different days listed. Then you have to do some research.
Michael- once people realize that they have support and that others around them may have experienced depression, hopefully they'll seek help.
Sharon- trust me... I don't post on all of the different days because there's one for each day.
Alexandra- I think we all must know someone who suffers from depression and I'm glad they're finding help.
I too know many people on anti depressants...makes you wonder if they are too easily prescribed?? Don't misunderstand - I know there are people who need the meds, I just wonder if there are some who could use a healthier diet, some sunshine and a walk every day.
My poor mom has suffered with GAD and depresssion for a lifetime. I have never known a time when she was suffering from one or the other. It's very sad. I try to help her by encouraging her to do more things, keep her mind busy etc. There's only so much one can do. Drugs and therapy don't work all the time. Her doctors say it's something she has to learn to accept...and live with...at 85, I'd say she's done that. The fact that she isn't laying in bed crying everyday is a huge improvement, but it breaks my heart that she is always so fearful and anxious. I wish we could understand these diseases better. @ #19 Sharon, a good diet, a walk everyday and fresh air - (we can't always get sunshine here) does help her - but, it's not a cure.
Thanks for pointing out some of the signs of depression, Kathy. We should all be aware of them.
I'm okay, I'm okay, I'm okay. I think. After my last few rants, I think I feel better, actually.
Kathy
A close friend has just closed his down and he is in a state of depression and they are working on it as a family.
Good luck and success.
Lou Ludwig
Sharon- I remember years ago there were some suicides by young people who were on a particular anti-depressant. I do think that some are too quick to prescribe a pill, and by the same token, many are too quick to ask for one. There are some who suffer with this condition and even medication and therapy can only do so much.
Debb- I am so sorry that your mom is living with this. One of the reasons I went into psychology was the desire to understand why people do what they do and how they could be helped; and one of the reasons I did not pursue it further was the lack of definitive cures.
Gabe- in particular, I hope that spouses and parents can learn to recognize the fact that depression while often a situational issue, can sometimes be a more serious and longtime condition.
Ron- ranting can be good! It often works for me.
Lou- I'm sorry to hear that and I hope they are seeing a professional for help and guidance.
