Zacharys Pizza. You know it's a great pizza when raving fans brag about driving 25 or 30 miles to get a slice. Or should I say "You know it's a great pizza when they have won over 100 ‘Best Pizza' awards", including being Zagat rated for the last 5 years? Zacharys has just three locations, one in Oakland, Berkeley and San Ramon and they will soon be celebrating their 25th anniversary.
Zachary's does Stuffed Pizza, which is different from a traditional "deep dish" pizza. The difference between Zachary's Chicago "stuffed" pizza and other "Chicago style" pizzas is that you will see the deep red, chunky tomato sauce on top and the two inch tall golden brown crust on the side of the pizza. Since their pizza seals in the cheeses and ingredients as it cooks, the ingredients remain moist and flavorful, and do not dry out like other pizza styles. Also, they are able to put in a large quantity of cheese in each pizza, because the cheese remains inside the pizza, and will not melt over the side and onto the oven floor like other pizza styles. Check out their online menu. It may look pricey, but I recently dined there with husband and teenage son. We ordered a small Zacharys Special and took home leftovers!
Zacharys San Ramon is their newest location (opened in 2006) and is light, bright and staffed with smiling faces. Perhaps that's due to it's unique ownership. This small restaurant chain is in process of an ESOP. Employee Stock Ownership Plans are a complicated but innovative way of transferring ownership of a business, of motivating employees to think and work like owners, and of giving long term employees the opportunity for financial security. Employees currently own 43.1% of Zacharys stock, and that number goes up each year.
At Zachary's San Ramon, reservations are accepted 7-Days a week 11am-4pm. If you are on a tight lunch schedule, feel tree to call the San Ramon location (925) 244-1222 to reserve a table and get your pizza order started so it's ready (or nearly ready) when you arrive. Evening will always be first come, first served. There is an outdoor dining area / patio for use in warmer weather
Note: Cooking time for these delightful pizzas is 30 minutes. Calling ahead at lunch is the smart thing to do.
