Halloween is associated with having fun.  But having to rush a sick pet to the vet AFTER they've eaten Halloween treats or decorations isn't fun.

This following post by  Janis Borgueta,  Key Properties of the Hudson Valley, entitled "Halloween Safety in Newburgh NY ... Keeping Our Furry Friends Safe on Halloween" contains important information and reminders for those that have pets themselves ... and also regarding the pets that tag along during others trick-or-treating ... no matter where you reside.  Taking precautions and practicing common sense Halloween Safety is so very important to our pet's health ... as well as humans.

I hope you will read Janis Borgueta's post and then make the effort to safeguard your own pets, as well as the beloved pets of others this Halloween ...

Halloween Safety in Newburgh NY

Keeping Our Furry Friends Safe on Halloween

Halloween is just another day to our pets. A few common sense rules can keep your pets happy and healthy on the spookiest night of the year.A Halloween Dog

  • The number one problem is CANDY! That bowl of treats can be DEADLY to pets. Lulu and Fluffy may love a sweet treat, but candy is toxic to pets… especially chocolate and artificial sweeteners.
  • Watch out for carved pumpkins and candles. A waggy tail can cause a fire and a pup or kitten could get hurt.  Nibbling on pumpkin may not be toxic, but that decoration could cause problems. A tummy upset from too much of something new in Rovers diet can add stress.
  • Make sure that any decorations are not in an area for a pet to get entangled. When things get busy pets have a way of finding them and getting into trouble.. and that could mean danger. Keep wires and decorations out of pet reach whenever possible.
  • There are those pets that love the dress up game… and many who are not fond of costumes. Know how your pet feels and don’t force them to wear something that is not pet friendly. Just because it says pet friendly does not make it so. Pet parents need to be proactive as Scruffy doesn't know what is safe. Be sure that any costume doesn’t prevent them from movement. Sometimes the dye in a costume can cause an allergy. My pup always preferred a bandana with ghosts and goblins.. and he looked rather handsome!
  • Take care that when you answer the door for trick-or-treaters that your dog or cat does not run outside. If your pet enjoys greeting people have a gate in place. Make sure that darting outside isn’t an option.
  • Some pets can be scared by costumes and all the activity. An otherwise gentle dog or cat can become aggressive when frightened by people in costumes. Be sensitive to their needs and crate or put in another room if needed. Some pets are totally fine with Halloween and others are very stressed. Knowing what works for you and your pet is important for a Happy and Uneventful Halloween.
Just in case... for an emergency the number for Animal Poison Control Center is (888) 426-4435. Always a good number to keep on hand. A few simple rules to follow and or furriest of friends will stay sae and happy.

Good information and very true.  I had a Doberman that not only ate the candy in a decorative pumpkin but the decorative pumpkin also.  He might have enjoyed it at the moment however what had to be done to save his life later was not so pleasant.  Lesson learned for the both of us.  Thanks for the blog.

Thanks for reblogging this post.  I hadn't seen it but it is good information for pet owners.  My poor dog was a mess during Halloween.  Poor baby.

Our Maggie used to go nuts on Halloween too, Evelyn.  The kids!  The costumes!  The ringing doorbell!  She was a wreck by the end of the trick-or-treating ... just way too much excitement for her!  Glad you saw the info and hoping you pass the info on ...

Hi Gene - That's great advice from Janis. With the kids gone, there isn't much candy left laying around our house, but the dogs love Halloween, and really enjoy meeting all of the little visitors.

Great choice for a reblog and we have to be super careful with our pup's waggy tail.... it's a giant waggy tail.

Dick:  They sure can be social creatures, can't they??  For those that have those little ones .. candy ... decorations ... hopefully this serves as a warning and reminder ...

Tammy:  Decorations are great .. and lots of fun ... but they must still be safe.  For everyone in the house.  Not just the humans ...

Kristin:  I thought Janis' post was a good one to re-post.  So many of us have pets ... and she brought up great safety points ...

I'm convinced that they will eat some things they don't think tastey too, Nick.  Best to just eliminate ALL temptation ...
