Mrs. Buyer Broker is at it again. I received a request from here to have the seller remove the political signs from the front lawn or she was not bringing her customer over to see the home. Here in NH people take their politics seriously. As some say this presidential election holds the future of our great country as we know it in it's hands as well as the future of our children

Despite what I think, this request could not only infringe on the sellers 1st amendment rights, it will certainly upset them.

I believe if a potential Buyer really likes a home, they will come see it no matter what the sign in the front lawn endorses.

The KEY is figuring out if the request actually did come from the Buyer or from the agent.

As I ponder whether to even tell the seller this request as my thought is they will blow up and ban them from seeing the home which does not help in the task of getting it sold.

Some have said to remove the sign, place it out back and put it back when they leave. My thoughts were would the seller mind? Would they even know? Either way I would know and I can not do that.

So what would you do?

Our job is to facilitate the sale, not express our personal political views.  Let the seller know the request, they can decide what to do, which just may involve a four letter word response to the buyers agent, or they may decide to take it down because it IS obviously impacting the salability of their home.  What's more important to the sellers, selling, or not having their First Amendment rights infringed?

Good morning Scott - I don't disavow anyone of their right to free speech, but I would ask my homeowners to remove personal knick knacks from inside their house AND from outside their house. Pink flamingoes or political signs are not the way to sell a house!

While your seller does have the right to display this sign, they are foolish to keep it up while their house is on sale.  Most likely, they are alienating 50% of the potential buyers and limiting their buyer pool.  Some people will see past this; others won't; others will be moderately annoyed and not only would it impact whether some sees the house, wants to make an offer, but most likely the amount of the offer and the negotiations.  So, I would advise your seller to take it down - not just for this buyer, but to maximize their chance to sell.

I also think the buyer and/or agent is overreacting, but remember that this is the only complain you've gotten.  I'm sure this has already turned off many buyers who never bothered to call.

BIG mistake.  I would do everything in my power to have a seller remove any political signs from their yard.  Talk about making the agent's job harder...

Good morning Scott. I don't think there is ever a reason to alienate a potential buyer. I advise sellers up front of that.

MORNING SCOTT!  Well - people are judgmental, pushy, aggressive and well, can be just plain stupid.  The best thing that can be done is tread lightly, mention it the seller - and you know, this happened to me once years ago - the seller moved the sign - to his neighbors yard.  Now what?!!  Will those Buyers go and see the house if the neighbor has a political sign up?!  Got pick your battles!

If a buyer is not going to see a home because there is a political sign in the front yard, how serious is that buyer?  That's one of the most absurd things I've ever heard.

People can pretty plugged-in sometimes, I think I would mention it to the sellers and just let them know some people don't all share the same views. We're selling a house, period.

Scott, I can't see where a political sign should make a difference to a buyer. Are they buying a house to live in or the sellers political affiliation? A little silly!

Lenn in #45:  I know, I know.  It is so hard to imagine that anyone would "remove" someone elses comment.  Now... who would do something like that?  Comment censorship is just so... Un-American.  < smile >

Good morning Scott,

I agree with most of the opinions that of course you advise the Seller of the comment and let them decide. In this heated election, nothing surprises me!

What a great question... what do you do? Do you think knowing the political stance of the buyer will undermine the negotiations? Of course it shouldn't, but you never know.

8:04am • #62

Wow, I can see this turning ugly, but ultimately, if the sellers are not going to buy a house because of a sign out front that can easily be removed, what other inconsequential details will they hassle you about?  Maybe they're the nightmare you want to avoid...

I think the signs should go and never should have been there in the first place.  Would a Realtor drive around with a Pro-Life sticker on their car or a big rainbow or any type of ornament that is offensive to a portion of the public?  Of course they would because some don't care about anyone but themselves.  Me?  This is my JOB.  I work for money.  I am not going to offend ANYONE.  Just like the inside of a perfect house, it's beige.  We should all be beige in the workplace.

I love comment #47. I would side with providing the information to the sellers and then letting them decide.

Easy. Take the signs out of the front yard and put them right inside the front entrance so they see them when they walk in.

We should all be 'beige?' Huh? I don't know about you, but my favorite clients, the ones where we have a lot of fun during the process are the ones that I get along with, can talk about life, politics, whatever and not put on a fake persona. Why does everyone feel like you need to work with every client. I'd probably fire this buyer if I was therir agent for being a pain in the a&^ and high maintenance. Lifes short, work with people who are sane.

If the sellers want to sell their home more than expresss their political leanings seems to me it would make sense to mention it to Mr and Mrs Seller before the listing. Isn't the idea to appeal to the most people as possible?

I believe the same goes for religous symbols as well. I was involved in a listing where the stager wanted to decorate the home with Christmas ornaments. It was a very multi-cultural area, so I wasn't to keen on that idea either. I'm not trying to convert someone, just sell a house!
