JD’s Pumpkin Patch - When life gives you turkeys, sell those!

Turkeys For SaleWe know the importance of being flexible and having a backup plan. This point is underscored quite well in a recent story about a family farm in Yacolt, Washington. JD’s Famous Pumpkin Patch doesn’t have any pumpkins to sell this month.

Despite being called JD’s Famous Pumpkin Patch for quite some time, the Schwindt family didn’t even have a pumpkin patch until last year. However, since it was such a big success, they planned to have an even larger pumpkin patch this year.

Life though, doesn’t always unfold according to our plans. Apparently, they didn’t fertilize very well, and out of four acres of seeds, the only spot where the pumpkins grew was in a field where the cows were feeding. No doubt you can figure out why.

JD's Pumpkin Patch - Go with Plan B T - as in turkeys.

So, instead of selling pumpkins, JD’s Pumpkin Patch is going with plan B, make that Free Range plan T, as in turkeys. Skip the pumpkins, people are encouraged to stop by JD’s this month and pick out their Thanksgiving Day bird early.

The free range turkeys sell for about $4 a pound and JD’s will care for, butcher and clean it in time for Thanksgiving. The Schwindt family says their 125 feathered friends taste unbelievably delicious compared to those purchased at the supermarket.

The folks at JD’s Pumpkin Patch readily admit they thought about saving the harvest season by importing pumpkins from an outside field, but decided against it. After all, when life gives you turkeys - sell those!

While on the subject of turkeys, thought you might enjoy my favorite Turkey Drop moment from WKRP in Cinncinatti. They should have thought of a plan B. " As God is my witness, I thought turkeys could fly."

LOL... Debb!  As it goes with gardens... Martha Stewart would say that a back-up plan is a Good thing.  Love how JD's rebounded just in time for the season ;)  So many wonderful lessons here... and as God is my witness...I think you're pretty fabulous!

Bud and Beth, there is no violence you have to witness in the short vid...but it is there in the imagination. ;)

Adrian - a bit of rain here too. I'm hoping my allergies improve...dust and pollen - be gone!

Hi Cindy - I hope they sell out too. Resourceful family.

Hi there Dick, I'm not surprised to learn that you like the WKRP episode too.  Be sure to share your alternative dinner with us...love to know what you'll be serving.

Ha ha Brad, classic huh? Nope, I think they'll be handing over the old fashioned way...lol.

As God is my witness - back at ya, wonderful you. Back up plans are a good thing Martha er, Mel. Sending you mellow yellow thoughts. ;)

Debb - Free range turkeys are yummy, but make sure you have a roasting pan big enough. Those birds get big!

Debb,

Great story, and I remember that episode well, and I remember one year in November when a turkey flew into our yard in Los Angeles.  The cats were amazed, and then the turkey flew and perched itself on our poolhouse.  I was about to call the SPCA for advice, when our gardenere ran in and told us the turkey belonged to our neighbors up the hill and he coaxed him home...LOL, I love how JD had a plan B instead of importing pumkins.  I love that. Hey Debb, Cute post. In particular I love the WKRP video clip. Reminds me of a much simpler time in TV. JD's plan "T" sounds good.

Judy, they also have a bit of an acquired taste don't you think. Not everybody likes the fresh and free range meat.

Alexandra - it's one of the most entertaining from that old series, which I love of course, because of my career at that time. Glad your turkey tale had a happy ending. And - JD is wise to sell their turkeys.

Hey Dana, glad you enjoyed it.

Hi Bob, great to see you. Hope the clip gave you a few laughs today.

I read this on the internet, it HAS to be true:

While the turkey you cook for Thanksgiving has never been airborne, wild turkeys can fly. Apparently not fast or high enough, however.

Debbie, aw, I suppose you thing pugs are ugly too? Lol.

Hi Roger, you are right actually, they can fly for a short distance, but not far - or high. I guess being dropped from a plane doesn't kick in that flying instinct. It sure would for me!!!

Debb,

You mean turkey's really cannot fly!! darn now what do I do for my Thanks giving advertising :))) LOL.. Great clip from a classic show.

I like the way JD's Pumkin Patch can change with the times. The price per lb. with JD's doing all the work I think is a bargain.. We buy a fresh Turkey from a small shop each year and taste is so much better than the large store bought version
