Large Living Room

Here are my tips for giving the illusion of a large living room:

  • Mirrors. Mirrors have always been known to help a room look large.  Mirrors reflect the light that comes into the room and "bounces" the light around the room.
  • Natural Light. Natural light is always the best when trying to achieve a large living room illusion, because it highlights everything in the room and travels easily.  Lamps can not provide highlights in a room, because the light is often too soft and only stays within the area of the lamp.
  • Hardwood Flooring or Tile. Hardwood flooring and/or tile always give a room an "open feel".  Because these types of flooring stay close the the home's foundation, it doesn't give a room a closer, cozier feel like carpet.
  • Furniture Size. It is important to take into consideration the size of your living room when shopping and planning for furniture.  If you want a more open living room, then it wouldn't make sense to stuff a small living room with large furniture.  Plan your living room size and furniture size accordingly.

The photo below is a perfect example of a large living room illusion.  This house was on the market in San Francisco this summer, July 2012.  It was built in 1963 and the entire square footage of the home is 1,555; not leaving a whole lot of space for a living room.  But with the tips from above put to use, this living room looks stunning!

Jay - I like your list. The one caution that I would give is that small rooms shouldn't have small furniture in it. It's all about proportion. Fewer, larger scale pieces will actually make the room larger than a bunch of small pieces.

Jay I agree with the mirrors reflecting the light- if placed properly they can make an impact in the room. Great list thanks for sharing.
