85 Comments on DEAR AGENT ~ YOUR KIDS ARE ADORABLE, BUT.....
Paula, your article certinly gave me pause. Although I certainly would not have had that kind of a greeting, I had to go and check my voicemail just to ensure it was professional and contained all my information. :-) Thanks for the post.
UGH, unprofessional and it tells me that my agent doesn't take her job seriously. Hey, we all love our families, but come on!
Certainly not professional - our v.m. message is a reflection of ourselves and business. Sounds like the agent needs a cell phone for business and separate for personal.
Oh I know that feeling! I had a client with a silly message and it threw me off a couple of times. I don't get it.
Definitely not the smartest way to win new clients or gain loyalty in my book. I think a little cleverness in a VM message is a good idea, but I would call kid VM unprofessional as well.
Never on a phone used for real estate! maybe a personal phone. But if you want to look like the adult in the eyes of clients place your own name and info on the phone.
Agreed, Paula. If we want to be treated as professionals in this business we need to act like professionals. A cute message, whether it is a child or a silly outgoing message, does not help achieve that. Great post!
Well I think it's fine for personal but not for a professional voice mail. And I find that many agents do not even state their name and company in their voice mail so you cannot be SURE you reached the right person.
And along the same lines how about asnwering your business line with more than HELLO? I always ask IS THIS ???
Groan. I can't even begin to say how wrong this is. I fully understand why you were compelled to write this blog post.
Yikes. Admittedly it "sounds cute" but is TOTALLY inappropriate for business. Maybe this is one of those infamous "part time" agents?
Dear Paula,
That is a great message for your home phone, but not on your business phone.
I answer every call to my cell with my name. That way whoever is calling knows they got me and if they weren't looking for me then they also know they got the wrong person.
And BTW I actually answer my phone. Yes always if possible. No automatic vm. I cannot tell you how many times a caller will say "oh you are the actual person I thought I would get voicemail". No way to tell how much business this has gotten me over the years.
I have a friend who lets one of her young daughters record her outgoing message. I do find it off putting to say the least.
Paula - You are so right. Doing this on a home phone is kinda cute, although I still find it annoying, but doing it on your business cell phone? Ridiculous.
Ew, that's a turn off. Maybe the agent doesn't know / remember this is the message? I also don't like when an agent and I are on the phone discussing a deal...and I hear screaming kids in the background. Move to another room, close the door, call back--but focus on the call at hand.
OK, I thought this was going to be on something else. I have taken one (and even 2) of my kids along when showing a home. One works - two does not. These are potty trained kids that can obey.
Paula, great advice.... We do need to make sure our message to anyone calling is clear and precise with all of the information necessary. Thanks for posting.
Hi Paula,
Good post. Having your kids do your messages on your business number is not very professional at all. It would make one wonder how professional she is.
That recording is a poor business decision. Makes me wonder what else she will get wrong.
