Green Cay Wetlands in Boynton Beach-More Reasons to Visit!

Green Cay Wetlands in Boynton Beach is a favorite place of many Palm Beach County Residents.  Located west of I-95 on 100 acres of former farmland, the Nature preserve is home to raccoons, bobcats, birds, otters, alligators, and many devoted “two-legged boardwalkers and photographers.”

Here are a few more reasons to visit Green Cay.

“You Lookin’ at Me?”

Cormorant

The  2 birds that I still confuse the Cormorant and the Anhinga.  This is the Florida Cormorant.  When I first started walking out at Green Cay, the cormorant always fooled me into thinking there was an unusual snake or awfully small Loch Ness monster in the water.  They will dive into the water and then pop up with their snake-like neck.  You can often see them on the branches of trees holding their wings open to dry.

“Not the Stork You and I Know!”

woodstork

The Wood Stork doesn’t resemble any stork you and I think of when we think of storks.  You can see them in the shallow water hunting for fish.  What they do is stand in the water with their bills open.  They use one leg to stir the water, and they can snap their bills shut in as little as 25 milliseconds.

Hi Kathy. I enjoy learning about the floa and fauna from different parts of this diverse country! I may start returning the favor. : ). I am spending a week in the Blue Ridge Mountains, enjoying the colors of fall. Not a cormorant to be seen!

Hi Kathy, what beautiful birds.  I love the cormorant-their beaks are so pointy you know that when they dig, they must be getting something really small!

BarbaraT- I'm honored to be by your desk!  I looked for gators the other day when I was there and couldn't find any.  I know they were there but just hiding.

Dorie- Thank you.  Those wood storks certainly look nothing like the guys that delivered us, do they!

Lisa- many thanks.  I wish I could take everyone out to Green Cay.

Scott- you need to check it out the next time you're here.

Jared and Amanda- Ask any snowbird why they're here!!

Kristin- Enjoy yours as well.  Every day's a new day out there.

Bobbie- you know, I'd never heard of them either until I moved here and started walking out at Green Cay.

BARFF- go on..... We'll get out there some day.

Dianne- yes, but there are birds, trees and other animals in your area that we'd love to see!!!

Joanna- I love it when you see several of them sitting in a tree drying their wings.

Thanks, Kathy, for sharing your photographs.  I would need to learn how to be a wildlife photographer if we moved to your area.  Flowers are easier to photograph.

Have an outstanding weekend with your camera in hand.
