Web content has a value that goes beyond the information that is presented. If content is good enough to generate traffic, then it has a potential monetary value as well.
For years I have paid for all of my web infrastructure and trips to the Great Smoky Mountains with revenue from advertising on my websites.
But before you start monetizing your sites, you need to have an advertising strategy. It is most important that advertising does NOT interfere with your primary content. For example, you don’t want ads from other real estate agents on your real estate website, because that takes away visitors that you have worked very hard to get to your site.
However, a high traffic real estate website is excellent for selling advertising to ancillary services, such as attorneys, home inspectors, and mortgage brokers.
The key is to develop “marketable content” solely for the purpose of selling advertising. The online "real estate" giants are excellent examples. They don’t sell real estate.
They sell ad space to real estate agents. It’s a win-win because agents can benefit from the wealth of content provided by these data rich giants and the sites can stay in business and develop more content that can be monetized.
Keep in mind that online advertising is a numbers game. It takes thousands of pages of well-indexed content and significant amounts of traffic to justify charging money for space.
But once you have the content in place and the traffic flowing, it’s time to get started.
