Moving Checklist - making your move easier.
Congratulation on your new home. Now is the time to be organized and make your checklist.
- Take pictures of valuable items before you move in case any items go missing or are damaged during the move.
- Empty your freezer. Start eating your perishable foods.
- Send your new address to your friends, family, post office, deparment of Motor Vehickles, IRS, Library, bank, memberships and magazine substriptions, doctors and insurance company
- Notify your utility companies to turn off utilities at your current home and to start service at your new home.
- Contact your insurance company to change to homeowners' policy
- Interview moving companies and arrange a date and time with the company of your choice. Note that many moving companies will not move life plants. Make alternate arrangements for them.
- If you are packing yourself make a list of what you need; sometimes you can find recylced moving supplies online or place an advertisement at a local website. You will need markers, boxes, bubble wrap and packing paper, cuters, scissors, labels, tape, blanckets and dolly. Many items are available at your local home store and truck rental company
- Sort your personal belongings into three piles: Donation, discard and move.
- Pack your "survival box" to be loaded last and unloaded first with must have items such as medicine, first aid kit, snacks, light bulbs, toiletteries, tools, water, paper plates, plastic cups, scissors, tape, sharpies, toilet paper, etc.
- Mark all boxes clearly on three sites.
- Keep all your valuables together and move them yourself
- gather copies of all your medical records and prescriptions which you may need
- transfer bank account to a branch near your new home
- if you have pets request health certificates for them. Ask for referral.
- if you have children prepare them for the move. If they are small you may want to pick some books explaining the move.
- Inform their school and request a transfer of all school records and transcripts to the new school.
- When you arrive at your new home make sure you set up the kids' bedrooms first.
