Heavy Metal Thunder. Norfolk Southern in Newnan GA

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Richard Weisser Realty

Norfolk Southern 3348 In Newnan GeorgiaWhile driving through Newnan yesterday, I caught a glimpse of the locomotive on the Norfolk Southern short line.

Unlike the CSX main with its seamless high speed rails and nearly hourly traffic, this short line serves only one industry South of Newnan. As a result, it is more likely to have one operation a WEEK.

And the behemoth engine may be drawing only a single rail car to the customer at a sluggish 5 M.P.H.

But there is something about such a large mass of metal rumbling over the ancient line that awakes the spirit and stirs the soul.

There will be a point when the railroad finally convinces the DOT that it can no longer afford to provide service to these out of the way places. There is no money in minor industry service. At that point, the rails will be salvaged and the line will be traceable only by the cuts and fills that meander across the land.

Until that time,  I will enjoy the heavy metal thunder when I hear it.

And keep my camera shutter clicking!

I was looking forward to another railroad picture.  I bet you have a ton of train pictures in your portfolio.

Trains are fun for the kids to see, sometimes not so fun late at night.  :-)

You do get used to them.

Or, the rail way right of way will become a hiking ans biking trail.

There is something very cool about trains. I (usually!) don't mind having to stop at a RR crossing and enjoy the clackkety clack as it rolls on by.

Richard, Old trains will one day go away I am afraid. They were so much a part of our history and I like to see one in motion as well.

If our local power plant closes in 2015 as scheduled I will miss the sounds of the train whistle as they carry over the lake for those night time deliveries.  I think the silence would wake me up.

I think it would have been so cool being around in the older days when trains were the mode of moving materials across the nation.  Trains are very cool.

We have a line in my town that was very close to shutting down and a new business came in with a big need, and revived a failing line.  Not normal, but welcome.

Hi Richard, I can really appreciate this post. It is interesting how life changes in the name of progress. I am just sure I agree with the limiting definition of progress however. I am with you, I want to hear the thunder.
