New England Patriots vs the San Diego Chargers

New England Patriots winners of three of the last five Super Bowls travel to San Diego to take on the team with the best record in football this year. The San Diego Chargers come in with the most potent offense in the NFL this year. Their defense ranks pretty high as well.

The Patriots will need to contain LaDainian Tomlinson and their tight end Antonio Gates.  The last three times the Patriots have played the Chargers they have been unable to to fully contain LaDainian Tomlinson. San Diego demolished the Patriots at Foxboro home of the Patriots last year 41 to 17.

The Chargers will need to figure out how to stop Tom Brady and their running backs Laurence Maroney and Corey Dillon. Brady will try and shake things up by being able to read the Charger defense. I think Philip Rivers will have a hard time trying to read the Pats defense.

The Chargers have one of the best linebackers in the league in Shawne Merriman who was suspended for 4 games this year for testing positive for steroid use. He still had 17 sacks of the quarterback while missing four games.

The Patriots were 7-1 on the road this year and the Chargers are 8-0 at home.

The Patriots have scored 385 points this year and given up only 237.
The Chargers have scored 492 points and given up only 303 this year.

The Chargers are winners of 10 straight games and playing at home where they were undefeated and this sure does give them a big edge.
The Patriots will need to play their best game of the year today in order to defeat the Chargers.

The Patrots had to play the then mighty Chicago Bears back in week 12 and they needed to play their best game of the year and defeated them 17-13. The Bears have a very hard hitting team and the Patriots played their best game at this time of the year.

As an avid Patriot fan I can only hope Bill Belicheck and Tom Brady can come up with a scheme to stop the Chargers. The Patriots were 14 points underdog against the Rams in the 2001 Super Bowl game and stopped the "greatest show on turf". Can the Patriots defeat the Chargers  today?

This writer says it will be either a very close game or the Chargers will dominate again like they did last year and pound the Pats.
I did pick the Saints to beat Eagles by three last night but the this game is to close for me to call as I am a die hard Pats fan.

Jay, Good luck!  Go Bucks...oops, LOL, I mean GO PATS!

Now seriously..I think it is going to be a very good game between 2 excellent teams with a proven records at home and away...This game will be a very close one and will have an over-time period to determind the winner, I also think the Pats will win.

jay i got your email. This is going to be a great game. Its experience versus inexperience. The Chargers have a tremendous amount of talent on both sides of the ball. The patriots have the ultimate intangible asset, that of experience in championship games. The Patriots are a scary team to play in the playoffs. THe Chargers are going to pull this one out, SD by 7

OK Jay, at this point we are 3 -2 on the 'bets'...for the Pats
1:33pm • #10

Jets fan here, so obviously I'm rooting for the Bolts.  Since nobody thinks Rivers should bother showing up against genius Belichick, I'm picking him to be a big factor while the Pats work on containing LT2.

Of course I thought the Ravens were a lock to beat the Colts, so what do I know?

Eddy, Chargers do have a great team and I believe how well Rivers plays will dictate how well SD will too.

GO PATS!!

Eli it's now 3-3

Rick I can understand you wanting to root for the Bolts. If the Jets were playing the Bolts I'd be rooting for the Jets. I like Mangini and I think he has done a great job with the team.

Go PATS!!

Guys...I'm watching a very good game right now...Chicago 21 - Seatle 17 in the 3rd.

I think Chicago will win it.

Now it's Seattle on top and the Bears trying to come back just over 5 minutes left. 24 21 Seahawks.

Jay, it looks like this one is going for overtime...24-24 with 2 minutes to play

I'll pick the Pats so I can have a honey also......  but in reality, Monika, close your ears....

I am picking the Bolts.... I think if Rivers can hold his own, they will win. Sure, the Pats have been on fire.... just as the Eagles....  but the Bolts are 8 - 0 at home this year..... and have some weapons...

In regards to the Bears game... I picked the Bears... but I was so tempted in picking the Seahawks... and if that's the case... New Orleans will go to the Super Bowl. I did say yesterday, that who ever one the Saints - Eagles game would go to the big show.

Wow.... Bears stopped the Seahawks....  I would have gone for it also.. but that was a bad snap and I would have gone with a short pass.....  you just wonder about the coaching decisions at times....

2:59pm • #16

Jeff, We do have overtime in Chicago...Saints will go to super Bowl only if they will host the Seahawks...but if Chicago will take it in overtime, they will go to the Finals...

Anyhow...excellent game.

Jeff don't be sucking up to Monika she will smell it a mile away. LOL The Bolts have won 10 straight and it will be a big test for the Pats but I really think Belicheck's defense will stifle Rivers.

Bears vs Seahawks very exciting as the are in OT now.

I's halftime and the Pats need to adjust. They will receive the kickoff and let's hope they can march down the field like they did to end the half. They need to contain LT if they have a chance to win.

GO PATS!!

Jay...you know just as usual its never over until its over :)

Hey George, thanks for stopping by. It sure was an exciting game and the Chargers sure were a formidable opponent. I know next week will be even tougher, indy has a lot of weapons and they are playing a lot better defense the past few weeks.

I don't know if my heart can take all the excitement.

George and Eli  control ourselves you kidding? LOL

Ardell it sure was a disappointment that the Seahawks lost but the Bears are tough especially at home.

There is always next year.

Ron Manning is a future hall of famer and maybe this is their year. I know it will be deafening in that stadium next Sunday and may the best team win. The Colts are playing better defense now and Manning has a lot of weapons to throw to but look what the Pats did to the Chargers. It will be a great game.

Ann  way to give it to him. LOL

As a native Pittsburgher, the Steelers will always be my team but since they are out of it, I have to go with the Pats since I am a New Englander now.  Funny thing, it is almost more enjoyable watching it this year.  I suffered through those games last year.  I finally watched a DVD of the SuperBowl a few months ago  so I could relax watching it since I knew the outcome.  I spend most of Superbowl day in the bathroom....my husband kept saying "But Linda, it is only a game".  Hmpffff.  It's a 'burgh thing!!

Hi Linda, what a bummer having to spend Super Bowl day in the bathroom. I am sort of superstitious as I will be home sitting in my own chair and just vegging out. I will have friends call inviting us over but if I do and they lose we both will know why. So, I stay home as I do every game.

Thanks Jay

There is a pretty big Pittsburgh contingency here in Connecticut and I got invited to a few Super Bowl parties.  I went to a pre-game party but then headed home where I always watch with my Terrible Towel.  So I understand the superstitious stuff!   GO PATS!!
