New England Patriots vs the San Diego Chargers

New England Patriots winners of three of the last five Super Bowls travel to San Diego to take on the team with the best record in football this year. The San Diego Chargers come in with the most potent offense in the NFL this year. Their defense ranks pretty high as well.

The Patriots will need to contain LaDainian Tomlinson and their tight end Antonio Gates.  The last three times the Patriots have played the Chargers they have been unable to to fully contain LaDainian Tomlinson. San Diego demolished the Patriots at Foxboro home of the Patriots last year 41 to 17.

The Chargers will need to figure out how to stop Tom Brady and their running backs Laurence Maroney and Corey Dillon. Brady will try and shake things up by being able to read the Charger defense. I think Philip Rivers will have a hard time trying to read the Pats defense.

The Chargers have one of the best linebackers in the league in Shawne Merriman who was suspended for 4 games this year for testing positive for steroid use. He still had 17 sacks of the quarterback while missing four games.

The Patriots were 7-1 on the road this year and the Chargers are 8-0 at home.

The Patriots have scored 385 points this year and given up only 237.
The Chargers have scored 492 points and given up only 303 this year.

The Chargers are winners of 10 straight games and playing at home where they were undefeated and this sure does give them a big edge.
The Patriots will need to play their best game of the year today in order to defeat the Chargers.

The Patrots had to play the then mighty Chicago Bears back in week 12 and they needed to play their best game of the year and defeated them 17-13. The Bears have a very hard hitting team and the Patriots played their best game at this time of the year.

As an avid Patriot fan I can only hope Bill Belicheck and Tom Brady can come up with a scheme to stop the Chargers. The Patriots were 14 points underdog against the Rams in the 2001 Super Bowl game and stopped the "greatest show on turf". Can the Patriots defeat the Chargers  today?

This writer says it will be either a very close game or the Chargers will dominate again like they did last year and pound the Pats.
I did pick the Saints to beat Eagles by three last night but the this game is to close for me to call as I am a die hard Pats fan.

Pats 24 Chargers 21

Linda  yes we are ready willing and able to take on the Indianapolis Colts. The Pats will prevail. This will be a great game. A lot of people thouht they couldn't beat the Chargers but don't ever under estimate this team.

Thanks Jay

As a native Pittsburgher, the Steelers will always be my team but since they are out of it, I have to go with the Pats since I am a New Englander now.  Funny thing, it is almost more enjoyable watching it this year.  I suffered through those games last year.  I finally watched a DVD of the SuperBowl a few months ago  so I could relax watching it since I knew the outcome.  I spend most of Superbowl day in the bathroom....my husband kept saying "But Linda, it is only a game".  Hmpffff.  It's a 'burgh thing!!

Hi Linda, what a bummer having to spend Super Bowl day in the bathroom. I am sort of superstitious as I will be home sitting in my own chair and just vegging out. I will have friends call inviting us over but if I do and they lose we both will know why. So, I stay home as I do every game.

Thanks Jay

There is a pretty big Pittsburgh contingency here in Connecticut and I got invited to a few Super Bowl parties.  I went to a pre-game party but then headed home where I always watch with my Terrible Towel.  So I understand the superstitious stuff!   GO PATS!!

Friends of ours we met in Aruba a couple of years ago mailed us the Terrible Towel as a souvenir after last years Super Bowl victory. I call it this year the crying towel.

Go Pats !!!!
