23 Comments on What's Hot in Appliances Today? Stainless is So Last Year
Hi Janis - The trouble with colors is that everyone knows what year you bought your appliances. Remember the avocado green and the harvest gold, and the bright orange? Just a few years later, those colors brought laughs from bome shoppers.
Great video. Colors come and go but classic lasts a long time. The fingerprints on stainless steel also made me crazy too.
Van~ I can't even imagine who would want purple.. ewww!
Bill - I bought a house with green appliances when I first got married.. I could not wait until we were able to redo that kitchen... avocado green and gold.. and mushrooms on the wallpaper and KITCHEN carpet.. OMG.. i did have vision.. one year later we took it all out and the house was really beautiful.. I wish i never moved out of that one!
Gretchen.. I never understood the stainless.. more money .. more maintenance.. I prefer white or black..
Susan.. You are so right on that one! THe video shows flowers... how many of those do you think they sold??
Jill ~ i am not a stainless fan... they always look smudged to me..
Hi Janis, I am so not a friend of stainless steel appliances and always thought to call them such is a bit misleading. Stainless does not mean no fingerprints! But which mom doesn't love those little hands all over their expensive appliances ;-)
I prefer white, too, and am in love with my french door fridge. Btw, in Germany it's very common to 'disguise' the fridge and dishwasher and make them look like a cabinet. If you don't know about it you may just be searching for a while opening one cabinet door after another!
Andrea.. sub zero does a good deal of the cabinet look. I like those as they are wider, but not as deep and look really nice. Those make sense.. but purple??
Janis- I actually like stainless and yes, I've been hearing for over 5 years now that s/s is out. You can't blame the appliance mfg, I guess. They've got to try to sell more refrigerators and if everyone has s/s then it's "let's tell them it's out of style so we can sell more. I also like white or black and am in love with the french door fridges. Egads, can you imagine walking into one with a purple fridge. That said I kind of like the brightly colored washer and dryers!
Great advice. I think that stainless steal, white, black (and various versions of those) will always be in style because they are practical, universal and neutral. Picking the right one of those 3 depends on the style of the kitchen. It does seem like matching the panels of the cabinets is much less popular than it was 5 yrs ago (part of that is prob. also dependent on the lower priced cabinets being bought now.
Stainless steel has never been my favorite.........those fingerprints would make me crazy crazier, but I don't think it's going anywhere. White has always been my preference.
Kathy~ yes Stainless is going no where in a hurry.. and the manufacturers have to get people to buy things... so change the trend and get someone out there to buy purple.. LOL.. and i agree about the blue and red washer and dryer.. I would have bought those when i built my house.. but then again.. they are in a laundry room and not out there in plain sight for me when i come downstairs to have coffee..
Debbie.. I recently saw a kitchen from the sixties... well now you can say retro. but it was a muted pink of sorts... including the fridge as they put the panel on the subzero... It was quite unique and expensive when they did it.. but very dated.. My clients were renting and thought it fun.. BUT not if they were buying.. a bit too unique i guess and just plain old...1960 chic!
Me too Roger.. i go into homes frequently and the fridge looks awful... too much to clean that often.. white or black for me!
Just got my new appliances and honestly, I still like stainless as long as it is kept CLEAN without smudge marks, because it's a neutral, just like jewelry. Now a red Viking stove, that would be fabulous.
Janis, my clients on the mid to lower end still like stainless...my high end clients choose what the kitchen designer leads them to which is white right now...I find clients after they have stainless dislike it for all its lack of ability to hide messes & smudges...personally i think white or black is ever present colors...excuse me they are not colors I'm told!
The first thing that pops in my mind is AVACADO GREEN. Trendy colors are not a good idea. You're pretty safe with stainless steel, white or black.
Okay.. a red viking.. now that does some fabulous.. that would be on my daughters wish list!
Ginny.. the lack of color.. black and white... that is my choice.. I just bought a new dishwasher.. and I definitely need to get a new oven and fridge down the road... but no stainless for me..
I will have avocado in my salad.. not on my refrigerator.. LOL.. Thanks Joni!
Everyone seems to want it but me, lol! My husband would love to put it in, but I just love the way my black appliances go with my color scheme and ground the room. Plus I have 5 (almost 6!) year old twins and just can't keep up with the finger prints. However, been selling a lot of new construction lately and love that the builders are throwing in the upgrade in many cases!
Hi Shannon.. I see tiny little finger prints all the time on the stainless.. and it just looks smudged all the time.. Black is what I prefer.. I have had white too.. which actually stays pretty clean too. My builders will put in whatever the clients want. and stainless seems to win.
It is pretty amazing how having the latest and greatest appliances can help sell a home!!! Great post and suggested for a feature.
Thanks Barbara... I appreciate being suggested! Looking pretty and not too trendy is the best way to feature any home..
Janis it is always best not to be too trendy when making a large purchase. I am sure the more highend market will go with the latest trend. And why not they will remodel when another trend comes along.
Jennifer.... some will and some won't being trendy can be fun. Remodeling can get pushed off if the market changes. Priorities can be reset and something trendy can become an issue... Choices!
