Different seismic event pattern in the Intermountain West this week

seismic events Intermountain West

As a hobby I observe the seismic events (earthquakes) in the Intermountain West (Utah to Yellowstone) on a weekly basis.

My information is provided by the US Seismic Service located at the University of Utah

As usual my information is to inform, never to alarm.

Fifty three events were recorded for the week in the mapped area.

  • 34 0f 39 events for Idaho were recorded at Island Park ID including a 3.0 and a 3.1 (both in the minor earthquake category, the remaineder in the micro category.
  • Utah recorded 9 event - all micro
  • Montana completed the list with 5 micros.

I am fascinated by the weekly patterns and the level of seismic activity in the Intermountain West. My home in Sandy UT is right in the middle of the mapped area that I observe.

What excitement do you have where you live?

Now that is interesting to a guy that lives in an active area in CA.  Is that an unusual pattern?

Now, that is an interesting and unusual hobby but, perhaps, not to someone who lives in your neck of the woods.

Last week most events were in Utah. Often they show at West Yellowstone MT. I have not not seen this number or concentration at one point since I started observations here. Next week, I expect, it will be different again. Utah government publications refer to "living in earthquake country".

I like to think that my hobby, if translated to your vicinity, would become more of a chore just keeping count.

Jill - some people collect bottle caps or catch butterflies. I'm a little more sedentry (with Archaeology background). We have sea shell found at the tops of mountains, you could probably collect some on a beach. Enjoy life.

Larry,  What???!!!  Still no Colorado.  Darn.  I was so hoping to come by and see Colorado added to your data.  Oh well, a girl can dream.

So, Larry - you're basically saying you're going to have ocean front property soon, eh?  LOL.  I know, I know - an old story.

I does look like you're along a major fault line.   Very interesting.
