Top Tips for a Smooth Move

Those who have ever planned and undertaken a move know that relocation is a stressful undertaking. There are many things to consider when changing homes, such as packing and transport. But these issues are just a drop in the bucket compared to the overall process of moving from one home to another.

One of the other hazards of moving lies in the fact that if even a single element of the move is botched it can stop the whole process in its tracks. That’s it’s crucial to ensure proper planning when getting ready to permanently relocate. So with that in mind here are some quick tips that will ensure a smooth transition from one home to the next.

PRE-PLAN

Anyone with practical experience moving will say that it’s never a good idea to wait until the last minute to get everything done. To that end, it’s vital to set reminders on a phone, computer or even paper calendar to remind the mover of what needs to be accomplished. This includes everything from dumping food from the refrigerator to cancelling mail subscriptions. The sooner one starts making notes of everything that needs to be taken care of, the smoother the move will be.

KNOW THE NEW AREA

It’s important not just to get to know the new home, but the new neighborhood as well. The good news is that the local Chamber of Commerce will likely have a resident package available for free to those new to the area. This packet will contain relevant and important data such as school info as well as the locations of important public works such as libraries and parks.

SET A TIMELINE

The timeline for homeowners about to relocate is going to be more detailed than those of apartment renters. That being said, it’s important for anyone moving to know the cut-off dates for everything that needs to be accomplished. Things such as forwarding mail and cancelling gym memberships can be kept track of with the aforementioned calendar. But other more important things, such as informing business colleagues and contacts of the move, should be done on the mover’s personal timetable.

BUDGET EVERYTHING

Even with a detailed budget many movers often go exceed it. Those with no budget or financial organization will quickly find money flying out of their pocketbook in all directions. Itemize every foreseeable expense and keep detailed files, no matter how small the expenditure.

TRIM THE FAT

Anything that the mover doesn’t need should be discarded before the move, plain and simple. The best way to accomplish the task of getting rid of excess materials is through a yard sale. Alternatively old clothing can be donated to a charity such as Goodwill. Craigslist is also a useful tool for those who need to get the word out about a sale or giveaway.

Thanks for sharing this list.  A suggestion to add would be to photograph everything before the move.

Enjoy the colors of autumn with your camera in hand.
