Scott Godzyk’s featured post reminded me of something similar that happened four years ago – an agent asked the sign to be removed from a listed house. With a heavy sigh and some humor, I casually spoke to the seller.
What did the Seller do? With permission, moved the sign to the neighbor’s yard. Now what?! The point is - if it wasn’t a political year – it would just be something else – like:
The neighbor having a politcal sign in their yard.
The sellers car in the driveway that boasts several bumper stickers pro or against all kinds of things – what about that?
Or the religious artifacts scattered all throughout the home – now what?
The rebellious teenagers bedroom covered in black and goth and a variety of other décor that a Seller just isn’t willing to change.
The list could go on. The best thing you as an agent can do – or suggest to another agent is – pick your battles. Don’t try and make someone else change – you change. You work with your buyers – and as much – work with yourself if you are the one having the “visual” problems.
It helps to go into these situations from the point of view that the other agent may have already had a discussion with their seller about things – and perhaps accomplished nothing. Either your buyers want to buy a home at a good price, in the perfect place for them, that they can turn into their own – or they don’t.
And either you want to remind Buyers that sometimes they have to look past certain things to accomplish their goals – or you don’t. This is not a perfect world and you can’t control everything. It’s up to you – just pick your battles.
