The California ShakeOut 2012, Perhaps the Biggest Earthquake Drill in History

This Thursday Californians are set to participate in what may be the largest earthquake drill in history. The California ShakeOut is set to occur on 10/18 and 10:18 am (easy to remember), an event that has occurred in our earthquake-ridden state for 5 years now, and has now become a popular preparedness event in other states as well.

Earthquake damageOver 9 million have signed up on the website saying they would participate, which beats the 2011 record of 8.6 million.

The purpose of the California ShakeOut is for educating residents about coping with a major earthquake and how to protect themselves in the event one occurs.

With California considered at greater risk for earthquakes than any other state, the California ShakeOut, now in its 5th year (starting originally as the Southern California ShakeOut but now statewide on the 3rd Thursday of October) involves the general public, radio and TV stations, police, fire and rescue teams.

Practicing “drop, cover and hold-on” is considered to be highly effective in preparing people for major earthquakes and to help protect themselves when one occurs. But the California ShakeOut is also about learning what not to do, like running to another room or standing in a doorway which are common myths about safety.

You can register now to participate, and check out a wealth of earthquake related resources for businesses, schools, the disabled, and much more on the California ShakeOut website.

Here is the information in multiple languages about the California ShakeOut.

Six other US states are holding similar events along with a regional event in the Southeast. Are YOU ready?

Good morning Jeff - those of us in the East don't have any experience with earthquake like you do, but I imagine if I were in a CA earthquake I'd be terrified. Just like practicing fire drills in school, earhtquake drills can make emergency preparedness commonplace. Great post!

Jeff, this is worth taking the time to participate in the ShakeOut. Everyone should know what to do during an earthquake.

It's probably a little more sophisticated than crawling under our desks - as I was taught years ago in school!

Michelle - you can expect to hear about this on all the major radio, and perhaps TV, stations, and there will be local events.

Shanna - education is key and part of that is getting the word out to as many people as possible.

Jeff:  Ironic that you write this today .. as my wife and I were just talking about the big earthquake that hit the NL Baseball Playoffs years ago ... and just what year that might have been?  Glad to see that events such as this are addressing a very real issue for your residents.  Best to be prepared ... and safe ...

Having lived in CA, and visiting there frequently, I am so glad this preparedness takes place.  We know IT is coming, just hope everyone is ready when it does.

Being prepared is the best solution in a natural catastrophe as mentioned above. I cannot imagine the earth shaking my house back and forth. Wow

Jeff, this is a really great opportunity for emergency personnel and the public to practice the skills needed during a real earthquake.  It also gives the average citizen the opportunity to educate ourselves and to make a plan for when an earthquake happens.

Gene, that was the Loma Prieta earthquake that occurred on 10/17/89, the afternoon of the first game of the World Series.  We strongly felt that quake up in Sonoma County (60 miles north of SF) but were spared the terrible devastation and loss of life that San Francisco and the East Bay experienced.

Well I'm a bit late to the party because I just realized I missed the timing. Hopefully the drill went well.  I was around for Lome Prieta and we need to be prepared to get through the next one of those.

Wayne and Jean - absolutely. But lack of familiarity is precisely why training and education are important

Gita - yep, over 9.4 milliion participated

Michael - agreed. You just never know when a serious one might occur

Richie - no doubt atbout that. Same with the fires we often get

Margaret - we were ALL taught that

Silvia - and we are seeing more and more disaster preparedness training and education, for all sorts of potential problems

Gene - 1989. My wife was actually in SFO when it happened - on a business trip (we were living in MN). And the East Coast had a pretty good one last year, didn't they?

Andrew - oh yes. People who live here are pretty used to it but no one can be totally prepared for a mega esarthquake.
