The Day That Thumbs Began to Grow

A "breaking news" story on TV this afternoon:

According to the news, today is the anniversary of the "Strengthening of America's Thumbs."thumb's up

It was on this day in 1985 that Nintendo introduced its game system. Life has never been the same.

Hmmm... do you suppose it's also the anniversary of the rise in obesity for American children?

You are right, life has never been the same!  My parents, (thankfully) didn't allow us to have a nintendo.  We did have a Gameboy, but we had restrictions on it and actually didn't use it all the time.  Lots of exploring and outdoor playing for sure.  I didn't see the news about this :-) Kasey

Kasey - I was kidding about the "breaking news" - it was just a little blurb I happened to catch.

My kids liked video games, but like you had a lot of things to do outdoors, so it didn't turn into a full time activity. Thank goodness!

Marte - this is a bit unexpected angle. It probably is, you are right. But obesity does not surprise me with or without the game. But a thumb becoming the most used finger is sure a phenomenon

Obesity in children????

HA!  Since 1985, the Nintendo phenomenon may contribute to the obesity in more than a few adults too.

I cannot tell you how sad makes me to simply look around and see folks in the grocery store.  Sadly, all one has to do is see what's in their cart and know why.

Which in turn led to Blackberry Thumbs, the OUCH phenomenon of overused adult thumbs worldwide.

Jon - When we were kids it wouldn't have occurred to us to stay in the house doing anything if we could get outside. Thankfully, my boys were much the same - always being outside doing something. Maybe that has to do with living in the country and having trees, meadows, creeks and critters to hold our attention.

Lenn - You're right about that. Those kids grew up and kept on sitting down. And diet does play a huge role. I was shocked last week to see a tiny woman - skinny, but about 9 months pregnant - with a cart filled to overflowing with frozen pizza, soda pop, chips, donuts, etc. I didn't stand and stare, so perhaps there was some real food in there, but I didn't see it. Following behind her were a young girl (her sister, I thought) carrying a child of about 1 1/2 years. I cringed to think that a whole family is eating nothing but junk. And then we wonder why so many people are ill.

Glenn - I'm glad I never got involved. All 10 of my fingers keep busy on a keyboard.
