Our friend janeAnne brings to our attention the fact if we are lucky enough to grow older, age.... we're going to need and appreciate a home that accommodates our needs.  Please drop by and leave your comments and input on janeAnne's page.

Via Asheville 1031 Mountain Homes & Land:

I, for one, am not getting any younger.

The other day, I could feel the weather in my bones! ..or as our colleague John McCormack. pointed out... "Aging is a fact we will all face-  if we are lucky to live long enough. In getting well-organized for independence in the future, older adults and “boomers” are wise to consider taking certain steps.

Indeed, designing and creating a home that allows function and aesthetics to coexist requires - and I want to emphasize this- PLANNING.

Let’s talk about this … An easy first step- let's talk about the statistics and general context...

The Context.Think about this-

Given that eighty (80) percent of older people today live in their own homes, remodeling could also be on the rise. And the desire to live in a home of choice actually may change the way homes are designed. In fact, NAHB research  indicates that aging will be the second-biggest influence on home design in the next few years. ( Source: NAHB) so, designing and creating a home that allows function and aesthetics to coexist already is of interest to:

Builders and Remodeling Professionals
Industry Professionals in the technologies market for baby boomers and older adults
REALTORS®- especially those dealing with issues of sustainability -
NAR GREEN®, Senior Specialists®, EcoBrokers® Eco-Certified Real Estate Consultants

Developed by a wheelchair-bound architect who thought that homes should be designed for everyone, regardless of physical ability or age, universal design may just be the next trend to watch develop...and AARP promotes universal design.

Let’s talk about what this means in terms of language and terminology of aging-in-place - where functionality and beauty come together.

Naturally, here in Asheville, I call this-Aging-in-PALACE©.
