An Easier Transition in Berkeley Heights

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Premier

It is easy for parents to get so caught up in the finances and logistic of a move to a new home that they neglect the emotions involved.  It is important to realize that, while adults may find moving to be disruptive, it can be traumatic for children.  With this in mind, it is important for parents to make their children part of the planning process so that they can better understand and accept it.  If children are allowed to participate in house-hunting or selecting a new school, they are less likely to feel that the change is being forced upon them. Begin discussing moving plan early on, and have discussions as ofter as necessary. Take children for frequent visits to their new neighborhood so they can better familiarise themselves with their new lives.

Moving to a new home, in Berkeley Heights and Beyond neighborhoods, can be traumatic for children and can cause stress within a family.  For your family's emotional well-being during a move, remember to take the time to support your family and work to make the transition as positive as possible for children.

kids involved in the process almost always makes it a smoother transaction all around. It also helps build trust with the clients when they notice that you care about how their kids feel, instead of just pushing them out of the way as a nuisance like I see too often.

Maria, you are so right.  We made two cross country moves with our children and it is a big disruption in their life.  One of our first things to do when we got to our new place was find the public library.  We love to read so it was a great conncection for us.

Maria - Great advice. Keeping the kids involved is a great way to ease them into such a big change.

Thank you Bill. I do appreciate your comments.

Marchel, One of the first things I show my clients when I'm giving them a tour of the town, is showing the where the library is. I also include library card form in closing packet. Thank you for commenting.

You are so right! Involving the kids is so key - but can be really traumatic for the parents throughout the search process, too. Kids are so easily distracted.Younger ones, especially can become bored or hungry, etc... It's so helpful if Realtors involved in the transaction find out before getting in the car whether kids will be along. It helps to bring a snack pack, some activities for kids during the drive from house to house...and engage the children on what they would like most in their new home/neighborhood to get them excited about the process. Thanks for getting us thinking!

You are correct. I grew up on Military Bases around the world, moved every two to three years for most of my childhood. It sure took a lot to get use too. It takes quite a few moves like that until it no longer bothers you. Lance

Lance, thank you for commenting on my blog. I've noticed that alot Active Rainers grew up on Milaitary Bases. I spent my childhood in different countries too but it was just because my parents had wanderlust.

I have a great way to bring the kids in - I generally send the child or children pictures of their new school, their bedrooms and some of the kids in their class - I actually learned this from a speaker I use to work for - it really stands out and the kids love it
