The History of Social Media

This morning Copy Blogger shared an infographic that made my head spin.Copy Blogger Infographic

This timeline of social networking starts in 1971 with the first email, goes on to 1980 when Usenet created an online bulletin board, and takes us to the first personal blog in 1994, to Twitter in 2006, and on through today, when Pinterest and Google+ are the latest and greatest.

The only two platforms I actually use with regularity - Active Rain and LinkedIn - are not listed in the timeline. So now I wonder where their origination dates fit into the timeline.

Meanwhile - the whole world is not online. Last Wednesday, after the debates, my neighbor mentioned that the news gave an account of how many Tweets had been posted during and about the debate. He wanted to know what the heck was a tweet.

Go here to read the whole thing...

AR was launched in 2006.  I think it was public 2006 (I think June).  But, the domain age is from March 21, 2004.  I'm not at all surprised that this isn't here....it's niche/industry specific and it's use is not widespread (although clearly a lot of customers stumble upon it and don't realize it).

I think LI was either 2005 or 2006.  I started using in early 2006 near the beginning and it's amazing to see all the face lifts and improvements to the platform.

Thanks Debbie. I wasn't surprised that AR wasn't on this list - a little surprised that LinkedIn wasn't, although LinkedIn is a business platform rather than purely social. That's probably the difference. I joined that early on as well - but didn't use it at all until about the past year.

Your neighbor is not alone.  I know one or two people who only use the Internet for limited personal business and searches.  No social media ... and no tweets :)

We have a few people that are just now learning to use a computer and even use a cell phone...  run into them fairly often here.

Carie - I wouldn't use social media if it weren't for business. I just have no interest in going to Facebook and telling the events of my day - it's more fun to just get on with living them.

Judi - and my neighbor will never learn. His wife used the computer in a limited fashion, but after her stroke he got rid of it.

Well, I am certainly a newbie, starting my social media adventure in May of 2011. Not sure why it took me so long to get in the groove. I took to it, like a fish to water.
