Can the Electoral College be tied between Obama and Romney?

On RealClearPolitics.com, they show the Electoral College Map -- solid, leaning, likely, and toss up.

They also provide an interactive version so that one can change the status of each state. Last month, I started playing with this map --- only made changes on the toss up states at that time. And boy, was I surprised at what I ended up with. 269 Electoral College votes for each! One needs 270 to win.

Did I miss a state? If not, what happens in this case?

Electoral College dead heat

Since I posted this, I saw an arrticle that laid out 32 possible combinations that can result in a tie.

Jay, I think you're living in a 'right-wing-information bubble.'

Not really.  I don't ever listen to the news, from any source.  I think for myself and research for myself.  Even Rush is only now getting around to stuff I was writing in COLLEGE term papers...

Jay and Karl ---

Glad this discussiion is free fom rancor unlike some I've seen on other places where friends and family are turning against each other.

Thanks for the link, Karl. I haven't heard of this guy before.

Karl --- and here's the response to Nate Silver's prediction

Pacita - I just read that blog. Apparently Nate underestimated the GOP House takeover in 2010, predicting then that the Democrats would take the House. He'll probably adjust his partisan prediction as it gets much closer to the big day.

It's interesting to see which poll closely resembles the actual results, and compare our own map against the actual ECV. :)

Yoianda -- exciting elections, isn't it. Just wish people would remain civll and not say things they'll regret later. The fact that some folks post on the internet is disturbing because internet is "forever". One can say his piece without being disagreeable, right?

Glad you noticed Pacita.  Karl and I like each other.  We don't agree often, but actually do now and then!  Actually I don't get into rancorous stuff with anyone, no matter how alien their thinking.

This has happened two times. Once in 1800, Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr tied. After what happened to Burr, it's probably a good thing we ended up with Jefferson. Thomas Jefferson won. The second time was in 1824 when the House of Representatives chose John Quincy Adams over Andrew Jackson even though he probably had more popular vote. Wasn't 2000 an eerie reminder of 1824??

Jay --- I like respectful discourse....none of the name-calling that seeks to inflame but doesn't add value but rather diminishes the debate.

Bob and Bonnie --- yes....2000 was quite the show. We may be heading in that direction as well. Funny when people mention that Romney's own state MA isn't for him and that says a lot about the man. Well heck, if Gore had won his own home state of TN he wouldn't have needed FL to win the Electoral College to become president either.

Pat:  No, you did not miss a state.  But... you have Wisconsin, Iowa and Ohio going for Romney.  I cannot imagine that ever happening... not all three.  So... if even one of them goes for Obama... he wins the election.

Pacita, while the NRO may not like Silver's predictions, he has been correct since he started doing the projections.

Pacita,

I am glad that we can voice our opinions without being "prosecuted". Too often politics can't be discussed among friends because different opinions would change the friendship somehow. I voted early because I am now in Europe again. Nothing I can change but I welcome the views of all others whether I agree or not. The important thing is that we vote.

Interestingly I noted on your map that MA is blue (I expected Romney's state to be red) Interesting. Do they know something we don't?

Anja, the voters in Massachusetts know quite enough about their former Governor.  From reading lots and lots of articles about his time as governor... they were very glad to get rid of him.  He made a ton of promises... and simply did not deliver.

Many times, he did the opposite from what he "promised."

He is also from Michigan, where his own father was Governor.  And... Michigan is NOT going for Romney.  But Michigan and Massachusetts going for Obama should tell you, and tell the whole country, something which is pretty obvious:  Once you get to really know him and see him in action... Romney is poison.

Pacita... in the map... they show Ohio, Wisconsin and Iowa all going for Romney.  That is extremely unlikely.  President Obama should get at least one, probably two, and maybe even all three.

Karl --- well we'll know soon enough

Anja --- MA has always been and still is a predominantly Democrat state. I'm actually surprised Romney even got elected as governor.

Karen ---Guess when one's own state doesn't vote for the candidate from that state, it says a lot. In that case, don't you wish Gore's state of Tennessee voted for him? Had he won his own home state, he wouldn't have needed Florida to get him the presidency

As for a possible tie...other folks are writing about possible ties, too

In fact, there are 32 potential scenarios for a tie
