Silicon Valley, Calif. (also known as Santa Clara County, Calif.) initiates a new area code overlay beginning Oct. 20, 2012. Whether a person is calling from Saratoga, Cupertino, San Jose or any other of the 19 cities within the County, the caller must now dial either 1-408 or 1-669 and the phone number to complete any call-even existing numbers.
In other words, as of October 20, 2012, it's required to dial 1-408 to call all of the current 7-digit phone numbers in the 408 area code.
To avoid hearing, "Your call cannot be completed as dialed," be sure to update your address book by adding the appropriate area code before each phone number. While most should be 408, be prepared for new entries with the overlay area code of 669.
