Donald,
Good post.
I have seen a lot of home handy man work in my years as an agent. Some are worse than others. Plumbing seems to be an area that Mr. homeowner is not afraid to tackle because "what the heck, I cannot get shocked". Well no, but you can sure make a mess.
Dana, I am always giving kudos to the plumbing trade. There is so much more to it than meets the eye (or nose ; ). True about getting shocked but boy you sure can make a mess when water is leaking everywhere.
Excellent example. Sadly, I had bad sink traps installed by a licensed plumber.
i laughed out loud at the Red Adair remark. THAT is one job you don't want to DIY!!
Lenn, Thank you. Yeah this was not your normal installation and needed a plumber attention.
Ha! I see that accordion thingee a lot! What if they take a Sharpie and write "UPC" on the trap? Does that count?
You gotta love the way the dishwasher drain is necessarilly full of water as well----it don't need no "stinkin" air gap
Great featured blog....just leave it to the professionals and save yourself allot of headaches and money.
Don't play plumber or electrician.
C'mon Charlie! Look! There are two air gaps it can choose from!
Jay, I see them too. On too high of percentage of homes. I think a sharpie works ; )
Charlie, I left that off for you to find ; )
Carl, Thank you. Them plumber may take a lot of jokes but a good one it well worth it.
It always amazes me when an owner tries to fix something... in an area where they know nothing about... and then are surprised when some calamity happens. If you cannot pay the price to fix it right the first time... you are going to end up paying a whole lot more to clean up the mess, and then fix it right the second time.
I have seen some instances where, after several days of not using the dishwasher, but still running the disposal, and the water in the second sink as well, a build-up of dirty water ends up sitting in the bottom of the dishwasher. What can cause that? Any ideas or suggestions?
Karen, It does happen quite often. Water leaks can cause a lot of damage.
As for the dishwasher do you have an air gap or high loop? That shoudl stop the water from draining into the dishwasher.
Very good post your illustration's make your answer very clear.
Jack, I will do minor plumbing but I leave it to the pros for the most part.
Chuck, Thank you.
Those traps are pretty common. I have never seen an air gap, at least I can not remember seeing one out here. The high loop is the method. That is when it is present.
Many have to live and learn.
Jim, Yeah I see it all the time also. Standard verbiage on that one ; )
I found one the other day where the "accordian thingie" was actually used to make the trap. Talk about a clog waiting to happen.
