When the kids come first...

...there is a chance to make the transition a bit smoother.

My parents divorced when I was nine, and my memories of that turmoil can still linger today. As a child, it was really an impossible situation to understand or comprehend. As an adult looking back, it can still be confusing and frustrating despite having a better understanding that it was what was meant to and NEEDED to be.

I never thought that the experience would prove beneficial in my day-to-day life as a grown adult, but strangely it does. I am working with a client right now who is in the middle of the storm. She has two kids under five, and the key focus is to create as little disruption as possible for her kids. In looking at houses with both her and her parents, not once have I heard a bad word spoken about the soon to be ex-husband whether the kids were present or not. The sole focus has been on what is the best option for moving forward.

As of today, we have found two very viable options and my client is weighing out which one provides the atmosphere for her and the kids. The two homes are worlds apart in style, age and character. So, it will be very interesting to see which one wins.

As a father, I thought I knew how unselfish I need to be as a parent. In this situation, I have been taught and reminded that the line of unselfishness is a constantly moving target, and despite my personal feelings or desires, it is my job to be a better father today than I was yesterday.

Veronica, I know the right home will be bought, but I thank you for showing me, rather than someone telling me, how to be a better parent today.
