Froggy went a-riding...uh huh.

By
Industry Observer with Nature As Neighbors

On our way to Bend, Oregon this past weekend, we had an unexpected hitchhiker. Imagine our surprise when a Pacific Tree frog  jumped onto the dashboard from parts unknown.  Actually, we think he burrowed into a bag that had been on our back patio - and inadvertently got smuggled into the car.

Froggy went A-riding - uh huh.

We wrestled with what to do with the little guy as we already miles from home. Do we release him somewhere and hope for the best?  My husband raised concerns - after all, this frog has lived a sheltered life. A well-protected patio with big pots, planter boxes, and a fountain comprise his world.

Therefore, we decided to stop at an Ace Hardware store and pick up a temporary bin for the trip ahead. We added some flowers and a bit of water to his habitat and felt good about our decision. Once in Bend, we transferred the frog to another container and purchased some live crickets for his two day stay.

Home away from home

Happily, he seemed fine when we returned home yesterday. Carefully, we placed his plastic travel home on its side in a large potted Begonia plant. We watched like anxious parents until he leaped out to safety, hiding among large leaves. It’s good to know he’s out there, safely home - eating bugs and doing his usual froggy thing.

Froggy is home

Home is where the hearth is.

That's so cool.  My first instinct would have been to pull over and let him out in the green area to the side of the road.  I think your instincts were better thought out.

Hi Debb - Froggy got a nice vacation and something to tell his grandkids about. And I'm chuckling, because that's exactly what we would have done in the same situation. I once took a neighbor's cat on a 4 day business trip - it was sleeping unseen in the back seat of my car - and we became best friends (the cat, not the neighbor).

Hi Debb,  That is so cool.  I bet froggy is telling all his friends about the adventure he had to Bend Oregon.  I'm sure others would not have gone to so much trouble to take care of the little guy.  Good kharma my friend.

Aww what a great story Debb! We have a resident green sticky frog who hangs out on our back deck, along with a chameleon family. I just told Jim this weekend they were our outdoor pets. They have really kept the bug population down this summer and have grown quite healthy. Thanks for sharing about your froggy's misadventures. Glad you brought him home safely. :-)

Debb: Sadly, I would have done what Alan said he would do...stop and let him out.  Not a big fan of "critters".  Glad he made the total journey safely and is now back at home though.

Oh yeah he's a happy hopping frog now.... If it had been us we'd brought him home too.  I thought Debbie was NUTS when she brought crickets home for our pond area from Alabama. LOL.  We have a chirping back yard day and night.

Hi Debb-love the story! Bend does offer some different habitats, cooler nights, and of course not the protected patio and big pots to frolic in. Nice ending.

Debb, Cute story.  My wife would have done the same thing because she'd be worried about Froggy's babies or Froggy's mommy.  I would have had frog legs for a snack.  But, don't worry, my wife always prevails.  You certainly made froggy comfortable during her/his trip.  Now s/he probably wants to do it again.

What a cute little froggy he is!  And lucky, too, to have hitched a ride with you so that he could happily end up back home - with stories to tell the rest of the frogs that they will never believe!

Debb, yet another reason why I love you!  I chuckled through this whole thing and am totally surprised that a video hasn't come from it. You and I are quite alike when it comes to stuff like this. Some would think we're nuts, but thankfully our husbands feel the same way so there's no "Whhhhaaaat??" when you suggest a solution like this inventive one!

Debb, you are such a nature fan. This reminds me that my son was taking my daughter to school the other day and spotted a leafbug on the bumper. He joked with her and said it was going to school with her. When he got home he saw it was still there but on the licence plate now. He took a picture and sent it to her saying "Leafy didn't get off, he was too busy reading Licence plates." She laughed!

Inna, wouldn't have had it any other way. It's hard to tell if we're friends...frogs can be a bit aloof. lol

Hi Janis - we thought the same. He really isn't very street smart. ;)

Adrian, yes you added another reason as to why we didn't leave him at my son's home in Bend. Totally different habitat.

Mary Elizabeth - yes, as he hangs out under one of our outdoor speakers ( must dig the music) and waits for bugs around the back porch light. He's got it made.

Lloyd, next time we pack for a road trip, we'll check in the bags "before" we load them, just in case. ;)

It was fun Sheila, and the grand kids in Bend got a real kick out of it...told Froggy bye bye  - see you at Oma's house, when we left on Sunday.

Gayle, I almost called you. Ha. I needed to know what they eat - but then looked on line. Not sure why I thought you'd know what frogs eat. I knew bugs, but wasn't sure how to feed them in temp captivity. Love you back and hope life is great at Fishhawk Lake.

Ginny, I think we did too. It was a bit of a hassle, but worth it.

Gary, who knew frogs could be so sneaky? :) :)

Oops, hey Alan, just saw that I started my replies at page 2. SORRY!  You were the first comment and I missed ya. We were going to look for a wetland area, but then got to thinking about what the normal enviroment is like for the little guy, hence the adventure.

Dick, yes - and my grandkids got to experience the adventure with us. :) I'm sure they'll remember the time we came to visit with our dog and a FROG in tow. Ha ha. Glad to hear you would have done the same. Makes me happy. ( Love your cat story - especially the last line).

Belinda, exactly. You get it perfectly. :)

Marie, when you see them on a daily basis hanging out - it's hard not to feel a bit protective. Glad your outdoor pets are working so hard for you.

That's okay Anita , I still love ya. We're all a bit different - that's what makes the world interesting.

Q-man. Oh yeh, froggy did have a big adventure. Love the cricket story and their nightly tune ... wonder if the local frogs are enjoying the transplants too? If you know what I mean. :)

Alexandra, it added a fun element to the trip this time. And yes, had a wonderful time with the wee ones and missed a big snowstorm my a day. Do you suppose froggy knows how to put on chains? lol.

Team Zuhl - when he first hopped up to the dash, we both were quite startled. Last thing we expected. Lol.

Cal gal - thanks, I feel the same about you.

Ellen, that's a cute story. I love his sense of humor. ( your son, not the bug)

Donna, not if you'd seen this little guy on the back porch on a daily basis. It's too personal. Ha.

Cindy, we have about three or four who hang out there on a regular basis, so could be. :)

Tiffany, full disclosure, we shrieked a bit when he first appeared. Argh, what is it? Haha.

Kris, good to see you and you've been on my mind. Bend is always beautiful - not sure froggy thought much about staying - but we sure did. :)
