Here I am at Peets Coffee off Bollinger and across from Whole Foods in San Ramon, California. I’ve been coming here off and on for coffee since arriving in San Ramon last August. Today, Sunday, is the first day I’ve brought my laptop along.

I thought I would grab a cup, a muffin and a table and peruse the 60 blogs I follow – relax and write a post or two. I had thought I would maybe make it a habit – come here in the morning for my eye-opener and blog.

BUT Peets has no WiFi! Can you believe it? A coffee shop in today’s world with no WiFi. What’s up with Peets? This is obviously a choice for them.

I was out at Hacienda Crossing in Dublin yesterday and stopped into Barnes & Noble with my laptop. They have WiFi. Of course, like many businesses these days, B&N is using WiFi as a revenue stream – as is Borders across the parking lot from the Peets where I am writing this.

Yesterday, I walked out of B&N when I discovered they have blocked all of their electrical sockets so no one can plug in their laptop. And walking around Borders yesterday, I couldn’t even find a plug in their café area. They spend tens of thousands of dollars on advertising trying to get your business, but charging your laptop or providing free WiFi is beyond their budget.

It amazes me! With all of the business being done these days in coffee shops and hotel lobbies you would think that the “brains” behind these machines would want to encourage and support their operations as the “Third Place.”

The Third Place is that comfy community spot that becomes your favorite personal place of business -  somewhere between home and the office. The place where you can network, set informal business meetings, and meet new folks in the community.

Glen Reyonolds in An Army of Davids, talks about the rise of the Third Place as the new business hub as more and more people move away from the traditional office setting. WiFi has set us free – some still do not recognize the potential of what that can do for their business.

The independents do. Invariably it is the small neighborhood coffee shop or bookstore that has FREE WiFi. I was attending a ten-day workshop on the Diamond Approach last November over in Oakland. Early every morning, I drove over to the Montclair area to beat traffic and had coffee and food at The Royal Ground Coffee Shop there. Across the street was a Starbucks and six doors down was a Peets. But my choice was obvious – free WiFi at the local independent coffee shop.

So, when I get home to “MY CONNECTION,” right after I post this, I am going to find all of the free WiFi spots in Danville, San Ramon, Dublin and Pleasanton, CA. where we do business and take my business there.

Find free WiFi through JIWire and AnchorFree.

An interesting side note: While I was writing this, the other two members of The Harper Team walk in. Unbeknownst to me, they have a morning meeting arranged with a new agent we’re sponsoring into Keller Williams. They’re at the table next to me explaining why they chose KW over Intero Real Estate and Zip Realty.

 Here are the reasons:

  • Intero – it was all about them, how great they are. In forty five minutes there wasn’t one word about YOU.
  • Zip – quotas and cold calls. Work like a machine for the machine.

Under the banner of How to Market You, I offer the pic me writing this post included in this post.

To support the concept, let me introduce you to Robyn White of The Pennsylvania Group. Robyn has started investing in real estate and also does a little property management. He’s so new, he doesn’t have a website yet. We chatted for about 7 minutes. I talked to him about blogging and a property we hope to list soon that might be a good candidate for his investing.

It’s just a darn shame that Peets has no WiFi.

I think it's ridiculous that they charge for something that costs so litle to provide.  They could get more revenue if it were free.  The most frustrating thing for me is having to sign up with yet another service and manage yet another account to get WiFi at their location.  It's not about the money!

They could charge me a dollar for the internet connection by giving me a passcode to use and it wouldn't be as bad.

All I have to say is that I LOVE the sign on your laptop.  It is making me want to do one too.  Hope you don't mind if I borrow the idea.  I am going to put my url on mine in case anyone wants to check my blog out from across the shop.

The community spot is something my dad had when he was a kid in the 1920s...those are long gone...they have been replaced by the hard earned dollar.... =-P

Too bad...the love of money is a pitiful thing to see in a person or a place of business....

Chris - I hadn't thought about it, but I too would hand over a buck.

Maureen - that's why the pic is there - some valuable advertising space is just going to waste.

Alexander - social networking will drive a few changes.

InUtah all the Starbucks charge for internet access. I don't really care because I have a broadband card anyway, but they are biting the hand that feeds by doing this- the appeal of the coffeehouse, especially Starbucks in America is their Third Place appeal and by allowing other, independant establishments to offer this they will lose loaylty and money.

The contracts they have with the cell-phone carriers to sell Wifi in Starbucks hurts them, while offering it free would earn them even moe brand loyalty. This is a classic example of a great company getting sucked into the downfalls of greed and power.

I used to live on the Oakland/Berkeley border. I LOVE Peets Coffee and, regretfully, you point is well taken. I actually have a listing right now for a local coffee shop that is for sale because...I regularly go there for good coffee and FREE WIFI It is a small, locally owned place, with great food and better coffee. A Starbucks has just opened across the street, but I'm not sure it will affect them much for all the reasons you mention.

There really is a place in the world for local independent bookstores and coffee shops and this is one of the reasons why. By, the way, Know anyone who is interested in owning their own neighborhood coffee shop in the Land of Enchantment?

Greg - I have bite marks all over my hands.

Deb -  I'll keep that coffee shop in mind if things don't work out with this real estate gig.

Had to tell you I'm going to have to borrow your sign-on-the-laptop idea.  That was a real "Doh!" moment for me!  GREAT idea!

Hi There,

I am a huge Peet's coffee fan.  In fact, their Ethiopian Fancy is all I drink.  Anyway, I think that you should write to Peet's and let them see your post.

Wow, I love the idea of putting my blog domain TulsaMetroBlog.com on the front side of my laptop.  Next step?  Buy a laptop that's not 83 lbs. so that I can actually take it to coffee shops!

Great blog!  I have started to work more and more out of coffee houses.  I'm going to have to create a sign like yours for the laptop.  I thought about just having my doman put on the outside in white lettering so people can just see that.  I'm having a hard time finding more and more free wifi spots.  Everyone wants to charge you now for it.  Thanks heavens for broadband access through my cell provider!

IF I were you, I would spend the money and get a Broadband card so you don't have to rely on the wifi access points. I still do a lot of my work out of Panera bread during the day, but I don't even use their free wifi, my broadband card is faster!  Now I can work with my clients in any and all coffee shops in Indianapolis!
