Thermostats, Batteries and a Way to Save Some Money by Not Having to Call a Plumber

With the change in the seasons here in New England comes the need to have to have to turn on the heat. Many homeowners will go to turn on the heat and find out that nothing happens when they do so.

A few weeks ago, I was at a BNI meeting in Boston. BNI is Business Networking International.
Dave Barry, the plumber in the group mentioned that he gets a ton of service calls on "no heat" during this time of year. He mentioned that if you are using a digital thermostat to change the batteries.

Fastforward, last week I was on a home inspection in a property in Dorchester. The inspector could not get the heat started. He tried the boiler switch, the breaker box, the thermostat. Then I remembered Dave's advice. The client happened to be a nurse who had batteries with her because of the meters she uses with patients. I asked her for batteries and put them into the thermostat. Voila. We made a call on the thermostat for heat and we go it!

Thanks to Dave Barry for the tip, we save ourselves a lot of frustration.

This is a good reminder.  The batteries in our thermostats tend to last a long time and we often forget about them, until they stop working!

Mike - good advice. As my son commented long ago when I bequeathed him my trusty slide rule "Where do the batteries go?"

Thanks for this timely reminder- maybe a good idea to change them when we change the batteries in our smoke/carbon detectors.
